Toot

Written by Peter Sommerlad on 2024-12-14 at 10:28

It seems, I am very bad at expressing opinions. people seem to think I am offensive when I don't mean to.

Nothing I post is meant to discredit or attack someone personally (except nazis). I understand that everybody's experiences and viewpoints are unique. I like to state mine, but I also like to be convinced otherwise. the latter means learning.

Please don't take any post of me personally, especially when you end up in the mentions. I am yelling into the void, never your face!

@PeterSommerlad to be clear, the issue wasn't your opinion, it's simply that when you say "do you even measure" it's roughly equivalent to saying "are you an idiot". it's just unnecessary, at least pretend to not be ultra condescending and write "what kind of impact have you measured that to have on your workloads?" instead. likewise when you talk negatively about scare quotes "experts" the implication is that the people you're talking to are that kind of fake expert - also super condescending.

@dotstdy was it the "even"? or the question about measurement at all. The even was unintentional.

Please understand: I lack the talent completely to predict how what I say/write might raise feelings within those hearing/reading. Afterwards, I might even be thick enough to get it at all.

My measurement question wasn't addressed at you, but meant as a general reminder that intuition or well known C++ optimizations, might no longer the best style in current C++.

@PeterSommerlad It's the entire question, you're replying to a thread of people who are your peers, unless you have significant reason to think otherwise you should work under the assumption that they do know the basics of the thing being discussed. The fact that you feel the need to remind everybody quite aggressively of something extremely basic when we're not discussing basic things is just condescending.

@PeterSommerlad heck, even if you think everybody involved is a blubbering idiot it's probably a good idea to avoid making that too blatantly obvious :')

@dotstdy

you see, it never occurred to me, people reading that take it as an offense, when they actually do it already. i might have thought: "if they are already doing it, they'll confirm, because I am telling the obvious"

for those who don't, i might have expected readers to think "may be measuring might be a good idea to check if my gut feeling is substantiated"

never i thought what Chandler assumed I was trying to express.

@dotstdy thanks for explaining me. unfortunately i will fail in the future when I step into the middle if technical discussions trying to teach something that some people already know.

@PeterSommerlad right well keep in mind that while being super condescending as you were before is obnoxious and annoying, taking that knowledge and responding with "well I'm just going to keep doing it" is a comically assholeish response. It's actually trivial to avoid but you seemingly don't have any interest in treating your peers respectfully.

@PeterSommerlad plus asking "do you measure" and warning about fake experts who claim to know things but don't, isn't really a particularly good teaching method imo.
