Trying so hard to resist telling people to come over to Mastodon everytime Bluesky does another "what if we suck at that whole platform safety thing and let a racist or transphobe or two hang out with you all, no biggie right?" because I think Mastodon has more of that "own your community" kind of stuff I think people actually want.

The problem is, I wouldn't even know where to tell people (which instance) to make an account. Like, that's kind of a problem. Idk 😐

I kind of think people are drawn to Bluesky BECAUSE there are no alternatives right now for using atproto. It's just bluesky.

Wondering if mastodon.social has the same moderation issues? Like, would it even be different? I feel a little insulated on hachyderm who seem to do an alright job. But it's largely a tech instance. I wouldn't suggest everyone join it. Idk!

@hbuchel im on .social and i experience literally zero weirdo nazi shitheels. like, none. occasionally they try but they are instantly vaporized. instances that exhibit that behavior are defederated, and in some cases, other instances that do not defederate are seen as passively hostile and defederated.

@hbuchel

Your instinct is correct. Mastodon.social has many many moderation issues.

It can be an ok place to start though until they get their bearings, and find a better instance to migrate their account to. But if you know someone's interests, suggesting an instance related to those interests, if you know of any, is ideal

@hbuchel I don’t even follow social’s local feed. Just find people via boosts. It’s all exhausting.

@hbuchel Social seems to work well enough for me, honestly. I've had approximately zero issues.

@hbuchel My instance chose to partially defederate from mastodon.social because of its moderation issues. We can still explicitly follow people on the instance, but comments and posts only propagate to dice.camp if someone is following that user (essentially vouching for them, I guess).

So yeah, there are issues, but it's so big, I don't know if any instances have fully disconnected from it, or would.

But I'm very confident that the Fediverse will eventually break down into multiple "galaxies"

@hbuchel Personally, id never recommend dot social to anyone who isn't a cis het white guy. A lot (but far from all) of the harassment I've seen comes from people who manage to slip through the cracks there. Although most of the instances I've used have similarly been smaller, more tightly-focused communities with strong moderation values—so I'm not sure what I'd recommend for a "general purpose" kinda joint, either.

@ryanrandall yeah, it's hard for me to recommend "come to Mastodon!" knowing that. And knowing that my timeline/feeds on bluesky are way more diverse with less effort to get them that diverse over there.

@hbuchel There is always an option to run your own instance. If you lack knowledge on how to do that, there are plenty of managed hosting providers.

I think this is the best option. You can block all the trash immediately and build a proper blacklist of instances. Also, there’s no possibility that the admin of your instance will melt down or decide to close it, forcing you to move to another place.

@hbuchel why does "it's largely a tech instance" matter?

I confess, I don't understand peoples' obsession with specific servers. It feels like as if when you joined Reddit your account was somehow limited to posting to a specific subreddit.

I appreciate there's a critical server connectivity limit below which reach and discovery are affected, and new users might not be best served by those smaller servers, but apart from that...?

@hbuchel if Hachyderm is

  1. Sufficiently well connected that discovery and search works well

  1. Sufficiently well moderated

  1. Not going to ask a user to leave if they post about non-tech topics

then I'm not sure how it's a bad recommendation.

I'm assuming people want to follow accounts of people they know, and their primary discovery mechanism is posts that are boosted into their feed.

@hbuchel I understand that people might browse the local timeline for discovery purposes, and obviously that's server-specific.

But also very hit and miss. So wouldn't new users be better served on a well-connected server where discovery via search and following hashtags gives a better experience?

@hbuchel I've been on mastodon.social since signing up in 2018 and have not seen anything out of order. I follow some pretty outspoken people who post about Gaza and other topics all the time. Maybe I don't know what I don't know and toots are getting blocked but it doesn't seem that way. Have not seen any nazi stuff either.

If it was a problem I wouldn't hesitate to move to another instance but have not found a need to...yet.

@hbuchel I'm now checking Bluesky and Masto only because the tech world decided to move to Bluesky en masse. A lot of the more well-known tech people literally moved to Bluesky only in the last few weeks seemingly because they could not bear to let go of their follower counts on X.

Also some of the dj/producer community also moved to Bluesky and skipped Masto entirely.

I would love it if everyone was on Masto as Bluesky will inevitably enshittify.

@hbuchel All that said, there has been some moderation issues on Masto for Black people (and surely others) and while I have not experienced that directly those issues understandably pushed people away from Mastodon and the Fediverse and it will be hard to get them back.

@joshuaiz Yeah, I've begun using Bluesky a bit more recently because the tech community picked up there after Elon's block changes on Twitter went live. Unfortunately, all of the bad parts of tech Twitter also moved over there.

That being said, I think Bluesky is currently half baked. I don't think communities will get what they want there until there are actual other platforms using atproto for people to move to. In which case, Mastodon already has that.

Need to follow others to see boosts and use “friend of a friend-FoaF” ontological model to build timeline.
