Oh no. Just realised I don't have a simple line in port on my laptop. I need a sound card.
Any recommendation on a simple USB sound card that might have MIDI in/out as well? I'm running #Linux so compatibility might be an issue.

Many people recommend Behringer UMC204HD. They're not special in any way, but they work out of the box with #Linux. Maybe that's what I should aim for?

@bluebirch as long as it's "class compliant" it should be fine

@owl What's "class compliant"?

@bluebirch it means that it follows a specification for how a certain class of USB device should communicate.
in other words, no special drivers are needed, and an OS doesn't need to support that thing specifically, it just supports all of them.
like a USB keyboard, it just works.

@bluebirch FWIW I've used M-Audio Fast Track without hassle on Linux. Other M-Audio branded stuff I've used without problems, it's just recognised as USB class devices that work out of the box.
I personally have no experience with this piece of kit but it looks like it has what you need, and a quick search suggests people get it running on Linux just fine.
