I know of my local activism ecosystem but my criticism is that while they perform a needed service they don't do anything that the progressive churches which came before them didn't do.
Not talking about revolution, but things like tenants union more salting workplaces, and changing the image of food distribution as somthin everyone in the community can give and take from of their needs and ability vs just a food pantry but in the park.
My cynicism has a lot of specifics I can't share tho

i've found a lot of folks at local bike meetups and food pantry events that have led me to find other folks working towards the same things.
i've ended up teaching maybe a quarter of those folks to shoot and taken them to their first range day and given away a bunch of pepperspray cans and pointed people to good resources.
i don't know if it's enough, but knowing three dozen folks i could call to show up to a protest is better than nothing, i hope.

@Ananas like.. i have a lot of skills and i've done a bunch of things, and sometimes i feel like i'm flailing around lawn-sprinlklering around whatever skills i have..
but then sometimes i get an email from someone i talked to seven years ago who tells me how they were able to get out of their rental situation in a decent way because they knew tenants rights existed or someone drained half a can of spray on a potential attacker and got away...
and, i don't know
it feels like it's something. there's so few wins and none of it feels good. most of it feels like work and effort and no gains.
i feel like i have to keep givin' 'er, cause i don't really know what else i got.

i helped a neighbor build a sandbox a bit ago. if someone off the street just came by and wanted to help.. you know.. we have drinks and wouldn't mind the help, and even if they were only around for half an hour, that's a thing!!
i've kind of found a comfortable niche where i show up to places and be chill and try to help if people are looking for it.
i don't know if it's something about my gormless midwestern face or i just look like a default random person or whatever, but i end up talking to a ton of folks from all walks of life and sometimes i fix their bikes and sometimes we go to the range and sometimes they just say "hi!" and never do anything else.
i legitimately have no idea if i'm helping. i hope i am. i hope no one i taught has to use their skills. i hope some people remember me ten or twenty years on.
it's kind of like being on fedi. i'm just casting whatever i got into the void. whomever is interested.. i hope they get something out of it.

@Ananas ya know.. in case you're somehow not tired of hearing from me.. mask bloc is sort of a hack for a bunch of this.
i've volunteered with my local a few times and every single person i've met has shown up to rallies and demonstrations. like.. 100%. it's fucking wild.
anyway, i'll leave you be after this because i feel like i'm getting into hectoring territory.. but the only thing i got is suggesting looking at whatever you're interested in, have skills in, and can help with.
i'm in a weird space because i kind of know a bunch of things about too much shit, so i end up with a lot of edge cases.. but hey
if you love bikes find your local co-op and i guarantee they have a fix-it night this week
if you love woodworking, there's probably a park district or local shop doing an event this month
if you're happy coding, there's a hackerspace doing a privacy workshop this month
and sometimes.. maybe a local friend could use a hand decluttering or just getting their space in order.
i know sometimes having someone visit my space and just go "you could be living better" and spend a few hours showing me the light.. hey those are some of the most impactful times in my life.
