For #DecRecs, I want to start off with a #podcast I'm enjoying: the Chinese Lore Podcast https://chineselore.com/ 📚 🎙️

Host John Zhu retells classic stories from #ChineseLiterature in English, and he's been doing it for ten years now! I've only been listening to his current, ongoing series, Investiture of the Gods, but he's already completed Water Margin and Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I really appreciate his humorous tone—he's not afraid to call it out when this highly influential story gets repetitive or absurd, just keeps things moving. It's a great way to make important stories more accessible!

The website also has transcripts for every episode, maps and character lists. ❤️

(I had this vague idea of theming my DecRecs around nonfiction books and papers I've enjoyed, but then yesterday I practically forgot it was even the start of the month, and I found myself reccing this podcast to @soph_sol so let's just include it. 🤷)

For #DecRecs day 2, I have another #podcast rec for you! 🏳️‍🌈🔈

Queer as Fact is a well-researched show by four Melburnians about queer history and media from around the world: https://www.queerasfact.com/. It’s scripted but still somewhat chatty, as every episode one of the hosts will present a topic to the others. They really try to talk about pre-19th century and non-North American, non-Western European stories.

Most episodes have transcripts and research notes linked from the website (more are coming). My favourite recent episode was about Okuhara Seiko: https://queerasfact.podbean.com/e/okuhara-seiko/

(Host Irene is a friend of mine, but I would recommend this podcast regardless!)

[#]DecRecs number 3 is an album: Gu Yan by Zuriaake.

Zuriaake are one of China’s oldest and most influential black metal bands, going since 1998. They are inspired by the Warring States period and include traditional Chinese instruments in their music, including the xun and handbells. (That’s the hook for my audience here. 😉) Zuriaake make vehement, emotional music that will transport you somewhere cold and wild. If you can see them live, do it! And in any case, enjoy one of my very favourite records: https://pestproductions.bandcamp.com/album/gu-yan-album

(Zuriaake on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zuriaake.)

[#]DecRecs number 4: the Leechfest podcast episode on Stockholm syndrome: https://art19.com/shows/leechfest/episodes/ac09c860-dc7a-4323-8ba9-26f2a4e67851

My coworker tipped me off to this episode, and while I haven’t listened to any others of this show yet, I’m enjoying it! It’s a relevant topic for fanfic writers, too. 😉 (Also, the hosts’ Swedish accents are very pleasant.)

CN: police malpractice, violence, etc.

[#]DecRecs number 5 is something completely different: Manta Sleep masks. https://mantasleep.com/

I’ve had lifelong troubles with sleep. These sleep masks are the best I’ve tried and have really helped me (along with a bunch of other interventions). They have cushions for your eyes that attach with velcro for a customised fit, allow you to blink while wearing them, and block out more light than other masks.

They also have eye-cushions filled with ceramic balls, which you can freeze: they retain the cold for 15-20 minutes and are fantastic for migraines. They are a bit pricey, but they’ve been worth it for me!

For #DecRecs 6, another product recommendation: Loop earplugs. https://www.loopearplugs.com/

I feel like most people in the target group for these already know about them, but I’m reccing them anyway because they’ve helped me a ton! After I had a near-meltdown at Paris Gare du Nord a few years ago, a friend suggested trying out musicians’ earplugs, which reduce sound at certain frequencies but let you keep hearing speech. I got some from Amazon and they worked great, but imo Loop have the following advantages:

I have a pair of the Engage earplugs for travelling and noisy environments, and a pair of the Quiet ones, for sleeping, which have become absolutely load-bearing for my life.

As an aside: both of the products above have added lots more varieties since I last shopped on their websites, which isn’t necessarily great if, like me, you just want to buy The Thing that will stop you getting sensory overload, because then you risk getting it from the website instead, sigh.

(My girlfriend actually ordered me the earplugs and my second sleep mask. ❤️)

@villainousfriend Thanks for this — I’ve been aware of them for ages but haven’t actually heard much about them except through their ads. I use my noise-canceling earbuds a lot, but it’d be great to have an alternative.
