We skipped the candles but had a very nice compromise on chair use this evening.

Part one of a vegetable alphabet (might include flowers if I don’t like any relevant vegetables): A is for Avocado, plywood woodcut, printed by hand

(I can see a lot of flaws, in the drawing and carving and printing, but it’s practice and a start on this project.)

Forget roosters, there’s a Carolina wren that sings outside my bedroom at sunrise. (Not the worst alarm sound, but I would prefer one of its prettier songs.)

I have spent a bunch of time today on carving & also did some printing.

I’m pleased overall, especially with the dahlia; I’m not thrilled with the “leaf litter” around the spring beauties, but it’s at least been a learning experience, & I might still carve that block a bit more. Might also try to make the center of the coneflower a bit spikier-looking.

(The chickadee is from the first medallion I made using ParsingPhase’s photo; the flowers are all based on my own photos.) #PrintMaking

This is great confirmation that the unusual sparrow I saw a week or two ago was indeed a tree sparrow! (That was my conclusion based on the likely options, but this one looks more like it than the available photos did.)

A small happiness this week: the hyacinth I bought last spring is starting to bloom again.

If I can find my big tripod again, it’d be fun to try a better time lapse of some of my indoor flowers.

I sent most of my New Year’s cards last week, and they seem to have arrived in most places, so here’s a picture of both designs.

I handprinted these from linocuts that I based on my photos; the lily is a daylily from my garden, and the peony is one from my neighbors’ garden (color differences are artistic license). (The text block is speedycarve.)

I’m very pleased with how much my skill has improved over the past year and with how this batch of cards came out.

Particularly exciting bird sightings so far today: a red-bellied woodpecker at the feeder where I hadn’t seen one yet this season, a hawk (probably a Cooper’s hawk) in the tree across the street, and a pair of chickadees that stayed low in a cherry tree even when Phoebe and I were pretty close.

Phoebe pic from yesterday as a bonus.

Less-terrible-than-usual bird photo — I love how the downy and hairy woodpeckers posed nicely on the size-matched feeders.

Granted, some of the issue is that blocks for carving are so much more substantial (and expensive) than a sheet of drawing paper, so I definitely have to remind myself that the blocks are supposed to be carved, even if I mess up.

Buying materials that can be carved on both sides does help.

This, so much this. I am aware that this is a thing, and I’m glad I didn’t let my lack of skill/confidence at drawing stop me from picking up block printing last year, but oof, the feeling that I “should” be better at that component of the process is an extra obstacle sometimes.

And I’m not ready to share the things I’ve been printing lately, because some of them are going to people on here, but have a work-in-progress coneflower. https://meow.social/@anarceus/113708570591769236

Today’s walk included a stop at the lake, which was absolutely gorgeous (as usual, but particularly so).

And in terrible bird photography, the dark blob in the smoothish patch of water in the third picture is a juvenile gull with its head underwater. (I confirmed its identity with my mini telescope but didn’t have the phone adapter with me.)

Sewing suede patches onto thrummed mittens: brilliant way to keep my hands warm while driving or terrible idea?

(I generally don’t turn on the heat in my car when I’m driving short distances, I can’t find my midweight gloves, and the long hoodie sleeves, even with the thumb holes, are not really sufficient for outside temperatures around 5°F/-16°C.)

Phoebe would rather be outside, hunting mice in the yard, but since I won’t let her actually catch them, lounging on her human is an acceptable alternative.
