1/ if a #developer is looking for a #job and they were looking for an #opensource project they could become involved in fairly quickly that would allow them to make meaningful contributions and demonstrate their proficiency in coding - are there specific projects you'd recommend?

2/ I'm thinking here particularly of junior to mid-level #developers who may not have a lot of "work" they can show.

I'm also thinking particularly of #web development. In my mind they should probably be looking for a full-stack app that:

  1. Uses popular tech like #docker, #git, #github, #githubactions, #eslint, #typescript, #sql, #react, #aws or the like.

  1. Allows them to get involved in the full lifecycle - from setting up a local dev environment through CI/CD to production.

3/ Provides them with an opportunity to work in a #team environment and develop their soft skills.

4/ Where the developers are responsive and helpful - e.g., submitted PR's are actually reviewed, given feedback, and if of quality, merged.

5/ Ideally where they can demonstrate proficiency at #bug fixing but also at #feature development.

@davidshq For a jr, a small solo side project is resume material. Vanishingly few people even do a half decent public side project.

Landing a meaningful PR in an opensource project is maintenance dev work, you have to understand a complex codebase, etc. That's like 2-3 months of sustained time & attention, you can only expect that from a coincidences of passions & maybe a personal need for a feature.

Yeah, you can fix typos in READMEs but that isn't going to impress anyone.

@davidshq All that said, there are lots of tools for finding projects that are possibly welcoming & ready to use the help: https://goodfirstissue.dev/

@mistersql A small solo project makes sense although I think a lot of what passes for a solo project is pretty underwhelming.
