Toot

Alright, here's what I'll do.

Before I post or message anything negative/controversial/disagreeable/etc., whether in public or in private, I'll write the whole thing down in an Org file, where it will wait at least 24 hours.

"Read-it-later" works great [1], so maybe "write-it-later" will also.

I was about to say something about "say-it-later" but, I suppose, that variation usually becomes "never".

@sqrtminusone This article is a treasure trove of good advice. Thank you Pavel for sharing it with us.

I have been battling with my own deficit of attention and only the past few months did I learn that overcoming such an issue would require constant tweaks to my workflows, habits and most importantly the ability to identify my (digital) weaknesses and act accordingly.

For example, I removed most of the distracting things from my smartphone and that rendered the phone obsolete save for browsing a site when I have to, listening to a song on NewPipe (where I intentionally do not subscribe to any channels) or texting a friend on Signal.

I'm excited to hear Attention Deficit Trait is a thing, this way even people undiagnosed with ADD can still recognize in themselves certain characteristics that hold them back from self-development.

@grtcdr Yeah, there's a lot of good stuff in Tiago's blog. I get why he's so popular :-)

The read-it-later workflow is also very useful for me. Otherwise, I tend to read my RSS semi-compulsively, like just reading random articles to distract myself from doing some extremely tedious task. And having this buffer between selecting articles and reading is really helpful.

@sqrtminusone I'm planning to take Wallabag (self-hosted) for a spin to see if the read-it-later mentality will encourage my reading. It's good to know that there's offline support for the Android client.

RSS, as you mention, has always managed to entertain in me when I'm offline and this is especially the case on my mobile phone, mobile data is rather expensive.

@grtcdr Yeah, Wallabag is great. I wish it were as polished as Pocket though (and I wish Mozilla kept its promise to open-source Pocket).

But I've made a small script that watches starred articles in Tiny Tiny RSS and pushes them to Wallabag, HTML included. It's pretty convenient because I proxy images in articles and because RSS Bridge parses pages better if a bridge is available.

@grtcdr @sqrtminusone ironically, I came close to stop reading it after seeing "consume" so many times. People should really stop using it.

I realised reading the article that "I have no way to solve this bug myself" problem has become nonexistent ever since I switched to using FLOSS software. Most of the time, I can fix the bug myself somehow or hack together a decent workaround. RMS was spot on about user freedom.

@viz @sqrtminusone

Well the consume:read word count ratio is 1:4, that's a lot but not so much as to disturb me.

Yeah, I totally agree with you. That part about Evernote made me smirk because Denote has had a significant positive impact on me and through its extensibility I found a simple, personalized writing environment.

Even if the project becomes unmaintained, it would be possible to continue to use it. You just don't get that privilege from a cloud-based solution.

@grtcdr @sqrtminusone I didn't notice the use of read in the article! I particularly hate the use of the word "consume." It sounds dystopian to me so I'm easily irked :/

I agree. Emacs has empowered me significantly: I can do whatever the hell I want. If the goal isn't within my reach, I can work towards achieving it to eventually (TM) reach it. With propriety solutions, it is basically unreachable.

@viz @sqrtminusone I agree on the dystopian effect that "consume" has. You probably didn't notice the word read because the article was essentially about reading, so it doesn't pop out as much as its evil counterpart "consume".

Totally! Freedom and skill are one hell of a combo. It's also a pleasure to see examples of people who aren't programmers by trade be able to recognize this after being empowered by the openness of Emacs (through self-documentation) to write their own tools (Denote, Olivetti and many others).

@grtcdr @viz Yes, that "consume" part also put me off a bit, but I usually try to extract the argument from a suboptimal form, be it weird word choice, offensive language, etc. If there's substance in the words, one can get used to how it's presented. And certain "productivity people" do have a marketing-like writing style, I guess.

"And certain "productivity people" do have a marketing-like writing style, I guess."

Right on! I can never put that feeling aside, though. It will always irk in the background even if the productivity tips are factual and applicable.
