Liking and Favoriting aren't meaningless. They let the OP know that you liked, or at least acknowledge their post. That's important for encouragement,

@mrfunkedude indeed, plus the information is also sent to all the servers where there are people following you so it propagates quite a bit.

Anyway, thanks for the video and I hope the bet pays of for you (and for all our sake)!

@gbryant So if somebody else "mirrors" one of my videos to their Peertube instance, and someone comments on the mirrored copy, does that comment show up on my original server? Are they essentially acting like a CDN or something, or is it hosted separately from the original server?

=> More informations about this toot | More toots from gerowen@mastodon.social

Written by Gardiner Bryant on 2024-11-26 at 17:11

@gerowen@mastodon.social it shows up on both the original and mirrored copy. The nice thing is that comments, likes, shares, etc are all native ActivityPub interactions, so when one of them happens on Peertube or Mastodon, etc. it's replicated across all instances that are subscribed to that post.

@gbryant Instead of making a mental note, going all the way up and then scrolling to that marker, why not just scroll upwards from where you were? Then it will stop when you are caught up, without having to remember it.

@ainali@social.coop Because sometimes there are those "load more toots" buttons that tap to load. And those always start from the first toot loaded. So it gets confusing if you scroll upwards and are load toots. But if you scroll downwards, it's more understandable.

@gbryant I strongly disagree with your assessment of Likes. It may not have an impact on the spread/reach of one's post, but as you've kept explaining yourself in this very video, that's not what the Fediverse is about.

I can tell you believe very strongly in the Fediverse, but the Like tool is literally the heart of the capacity to detox the paradigms that make Social Media the cesspool it is. The capacity to dismantle the "reach = relevance" syndrome that promulgates so much shlock, umbrage, and disparagement that rots Big Social is the only way we'll create a true home that's genuine. I think the capacity to Like without indulging in that syndrome is vital.
