The climate crisis and all the evil in the world drives me to despair
https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/nov/24/the-climate-crisis-and-all-the-evil-in-the-world-drives-me-to-despair
I work in climate change and am having to pretend every day that there is still a chance we can prevent catastrophic climate change. I find it ever harder to be around people who don’t get just how bad things are. I don’t have kids and am single. I can’t talk to my family about it because they are rightwing, wealthy climate sceptics. They patronise me (despite the fact I’m nearly 60 and a chief executive).
Planet Earth is so beautiful, so incredible, I cry with the pain of what we are doing to it and to each other.

@largess "The despair you feel because of the dying of the ash trees and the lessening of birdsong, the dwindling number of insects, these are the signs of your capacity to love the world. Do not deny that love. Let it be the fire that drives you to act, not the burden that crushes you. Yes, we face a calamitous future, but does that not make our efforts, however small, even more necessary?"
Beautiful, thanks for sharing.

@jsoriano @largess This deeply poignant passage, especially, made me think of this:
“Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces,
I would still plant my apple tree.”

Thank you for your post.
I've noted in the past few years the steep decline in insects around our porch light. It is truly frightening.
Peace

@largess Thanks for the share. I have never felt an urge to read Voltaire but seems I now could.

@largess IMO we've already blown past 1.5 degrees, congrats to all the deniers.
We're probably too late to avoid 3 degrees also. Best to forgrt the now pointlessall mitigation efforts and look into what we need to survive as a species.

@largess totally agree with this, I would say for me, encouraging my kids into music and getting involved in my local community have been the two things that have saved me from despair.

@largess Man that sounds very familiar. Am just a few decades younger.
I feel like a magician. I understand the trick, so the magic to me is gone but for all others to stay hopeful I remember how it was to feel hope and project it to the outside.
I am so tired, in grief and scared.
Activists can at least scream it out. I have to mask to look professional....
You are not alone.
Not sure if their English is sufficient but in Germany there is a support group for climate protesters called @psy4f
