In spite of (or because of) so much that is grim & heartbreaking, my wish for you and for our world is a New Year rich in joy, peace, love, health, kindness, and contentment. May we all prosper in the ways that truly matter.
Enjoy this beautiful Dougie MacLean video, an annual tradition at Chez Laloofah…

“Genealogy without sources is mythology.”
Seeing this more often & it’s made me peevish. Today’s is a death date & place on tree after tree w/no sources or notes, & I find no info anywhere on this relative’s death.
I wish we humans, while inspired to reasonably seek fact-based answers/explanations, had patience not knowing a thing instead of a compulsion to make 💩 up (or copy other people’s made-up 💩) & pretend it’s verified fact. And this applies to more than genealogy.

“…shooting this man is considered by everybody to be violence, but cold calculating corporate decisions driven entirely by profit that lead directly to the deaths of countless innocent people, that's not considered violence. No, that's just considered, what, policy? Good business?… Where's the bureaucratic violence, why doesn't that count as violence?…
I think there’s a line & this country…has been hurtling headlong towards it at terminal velocity since at least the days of Ronnie Reagan…”

“That's why this case is so huge; because it shows so clearly how vitally important all that culture war shit is to the ruling class. Because they know if they don't use that to keep the rest of us distracted & at each others’ throats, then it won't be long before the blade of a guillotine is at theirs. That's the truth, & now thanks to our beloved Vinny Vigilante over here, this country feels like it's closer than ever to realizing that…”

“In Nov 2024, VA’s National Cemetery Administration officially opened Green Burial sections at Pikes Peak National Cemetery in Colorado Springs, Nat’l Mem’l Cemetery of AZ in Phoenix, & FL Nat’l Cemetery in Bushnell. The number of green burial sites at each…are 152, 155 & 222, respectively.
Green burials…aid in the conservation of natural resources, ⬇️ of carbon emissions, protection of worker health, & restoration &/or preservation of habitat…”

…“South Koreans’ immediate & aggressive response to a man trying to take away their democratic rights is an inspiration. …it illustrates that for all the claims that autocracy can react to events more quickly than democracy can, in fact autocrats are brittle. It’s democracy that’s determined & resilient…
[F]or all people often 👀 to larger-than-life figures to define our nations, our history is in fact made up of regular people doing the best they can.”

🔥“Congress…designed…institutions like the DOJ, FBI, CIA, & DoD to support the mission of the Constitution…the fundamental law of 🇺🇸. …in 1883…Congress passed a law requiring [those] who staff govt offices be hired [for] their skills, not their partisanship.
The ppl who work in govt institutions—& therefore the institutions themselves—…keep the govt running smoothly & according to the law no matter [who is POTUS]. It’s precisely that stability…MAGA leaders want to destroy.”

My great-great grandfather, a farmer in Asciano Pisano, Italy, was named Ulivo, meaning “Olive.”
His daughter-in-law (my great-grandmother), the daughter of Asciano farmers, was named Uliva, meaning… yup, “Olive.”
Reckon what their families grew? 😏 🫒
An 🇮🇹 childhood friend of my mom’s in Montana would smuggle black olives into the movies to snack on. He’s my spirit animal. 😋
I find most people either ❤️ olives or 😖 them. Care to share your own olive preferences?

“There are a few times in life when you leap up
and the past that you'd been standing on falls away behind you,
and the future you mean to land on is not yet in place,
and for a moment you're suspended knowing nothing and no one,
not even yourself.”

While I was doing a few outdoor chores a little while ago, I heard coyotes harmonizing in the near distance. What a wonderful, welcome balm for my mind, heart, & spirit.
“If you talk to the animals, they will talk with you
and you will know each other.
If you do not talk to them, you will not know them,
and what you do not know you will fear.
What one fears, one destroys.”

I cannot imagine this bunch of avaricious, rapacious megalomaniacs not turning on & devouring each other. And I doubt it will take long (though it will feel like it does). The question is how many lives & how much of our government, society, & national treasure they’ll have devoured first.

Remembering the luminous James Baldwin, who died 1 Dec 1987:
“You think your pains & heartbreaks are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, or who have ever been alive.”
“It is certain, in any case, that ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.”

Another valuable history lesson & perspective from #HeatherCoxRichardson …
“The post–World War II liberal consensus was the American recognition that protecting the rights of individuals in the modern era required not a weak government but a strong one.
…In its place, [“Movement Conservatives”] resurrected the ideology of the world the American Founders rejected, a world in which an impoverished majority suffers under the rule of a powerful few.”

One of the most unusual causes of death I’ve seen on a death certificate:
“Acute mania (10 days). Exhaustion from mental excitement.”
This was a 41-year old farmer with a wife & six kids…in 1932. The stressors must have overwhelmed him. 💔
His widow remarried 14 months later to a distant cousin of my husband. Together they raised her kids & by 1940 they’d had 3 of their own. Hope they had a happy life.
Take care of yourselves & each other, build resilience, ask for help when needed. 💞

This fav dish in our regular rotation is also a hearty, comforting dinner for this cold, misty holiday.
We omit the oil & 🧂 (best to salt your portion to taste, if desired), use 1/2 of a white onion instead of shallots, & omit the walnuts (my husband can’t have nuts 😟) but I add them to my serving. If you have no nut allergy or other health consideration, the walnuts baked in the topping are 🤌 👨🍳 💋!
Delish served w/steamed 🥦, & I esp ❤️ this as cold or reheated leftovers!
