One in 10 homes could become uninsurable by 2035, analyst warns

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-01-15/insurance-premiums-rising-uninsurable-homes-climate-change/104814932

The latest calculations from Climate Valuation analysts found about 380,000 properties in Australia were either uninsurable or unaffordable to insure, equating to about one in every 20 homes.
That figure was expected to increase to one in 10 within the next decade, according to the firm's latest data.
Climate Valuation chief executive Karl Mallon said the rate at which houses were deemed uninsurable was increasing.
"All of this, unfortunately, is rolling out like clockwork, just as has been predicted in the climate models," Dr Mallon said.

Having done everything we can to make climate change worse, the dildo of consequence has arrived.

To resist the climate crisis, we must resist the billionaire class

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/jan/10/climate-crisis-billionaire-class

To solve the climate crisis, power must flow away from the billionaire class
I choose to focus my energy on the climate crisis because a habitable planet is a prerequisite for everything worth fighting for, and because the prospect of losing a planet feels horrific and sad to me in a primal way that I can’t express with words.

‘We need dramatic social and technological changes’: is societal collapse inevitable?

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/dec/28/we-need-dramatic-social-and-technological-changes-is-societal-collapse-inevitable

Academic Danilo Brozović says studies of failed civilisations all point in one direction – today’s society needs radical transformation to survive
Most scholars are more optimistic, if not actually optimists. Brozović says: “They say collapse for us will just be the end of life as we know it today. There will be less globalisation and a lower standard of life, affecting public health very negatively.”

Thats essentially my position, the optimistic one :)

We’re Burning More Coal Than Ever

https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2024-12-18/we-re-burning-more-coal-than-ever-thanks-to-china

Coal demand set a record high in 2024, according to the International Energy Agency’s annual report published on Wednesday. The report makes for a depressing reading: The planet is losing to our unquenchable demand for king coal. Forget all the slogans about consigning coal to history. We’re on a path to consigning the planet to history.

Coal use to reach new peak – and remain at near-record levels for years

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2024/dec/18/coal-use-to-reach-new-peak-and-remain-at-near-record-levels-for-years

The world’s coal use is expected to reach a fresh high of 8.7bn tonnes this year, and remain at near-record levels for years as a result of a global gas crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
There has been record production and trade of coal and power generation from coal since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine inflated global gas market prices, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
The IEA said the coal rebound, after a slump during the global Covid pandemic, means consumption of the fossil fuel is now on track to rise to a new peak of 8.77bn tonnes by the end of the year – and could remain at near-record levels until 2027.

Tourism emissions surge over last decade and now make up 9 per cent of global total, report finds

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-12-11/tourism-air-travel-carbon-emissions-surge-environment/104701158

As Australians gear up for the holiday season, new research reveals the growing environmental cost of global tourism.
Emissions from the tourism sector have surged by 40 per cent over the past decade and now make up 9 per cent of the world's greenhouse emissions, a new study has found.
Experts warn the figure could double every 20 years, which is incompatible with the Paris Agreement's goal for the sector to reduce its emissions by more than 10 per cent annually.

These six charts tell the story of Australia's (slow) progress on climate change

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-12-09/australias-climate-change-policy-problem-in-charts/104689682

Climate and Energy minister Chris Bowen declared "Australia is on track to deliver on our legislated targets" in his annual climate statement. But new data challenges that optimism.
The only really big cuts so far have happened in the land sector — by felling fewer trees, and planting more. (In the jargon of carbon reporting, that's called Land Use, or more formally Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF)).
All other emissions combined are now nearly identical to what they were in 2005.

An Eighth of an Inch? … In How Long?

https://tamino.wordpress.com/2024/11/29/an-eighth-of-an-inch-in-how-long/

Donald Trump has said many times in the last few months that because of global warming, sea level will rise an eighth of an inch in several hundred years — but just how many hundreds of years… He usually follows by adding that “we’ll have more beachfront property.”
It is just about the stupidest thing one could possibly say about sea level rise.

The climate crisis and all the evil in the world drives me to despair

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/nov/24/the-climate-crisis-and-all-the-evil-in-the-world-drives-me-to-despair

I work in climate change and am having to pretend every day that there is still a chance we can prevent catastrophic climate change. I find it ever harder to be around people who don’t get just how bad things are. I don’t have kids and am single. I can’t talk to my family about it because they are rightwing, wealthy climate sceptics. They patronise me (despite the fact I’m nearly 60 and a chief executive).
Planet Earth is so beautiful, so incredible, I cry with the pain of what we are doing to it and to each other.

Floods strike thousands of houses in northern Philippines

https://phys.org/news/2024-11-thousands-houses-northern-philippines.html

Floodwaters reaching more than four meters high swamped thousands of houses in the storm-battered northern Philippines on Tuesday after rivers overflowed following heavy rain and a dam release.
More than a million people fled their homes ahead of Man-yi, which struck the Philippines as a super typhoon before significantly weakening as it swept over the mountains of the main island of Luzon.
Man-yi dumped heavy rain, smashed flimsy buildings, knocked out power and claimed at least eight lives.
Climate change is increasing the intensity of storms, leading to heavier rains, flash floods and stronger gusts.

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/2024-will-be-the-first-year-to-exceed-the-1-5-degree-celsius-warming/

It is “virtually certain” that 2024 will be the first year to be more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) hotter than in the preindustrial era, before heat-trapping fossil fuels began accumulating in the atmosphere, the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) announced today.

‘Wicked problem’: five charts that show how the climate crisis is making Australia more dangerous

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/oct/31/wicked-problem-five-charts-that-show-how-the-climate-crisis-is-making-australia-more-dangerous

A report by BoM and CSIRO checks ‘vital signs of Australia’s climate’ – and shows temperature trends will only worsen
Dr Jaci Brown, research manager at CSIRO, said: “It’s not just a little bit hotter. These are long heatwaves and it’s not cooling down overnight
Soon, bushfire insurance will be unaffordable,” he said. “A frightening consequence of loss of bushfire insurance is increased deaths as people heroically try to save their homes by not evacuating.”

Could be worse... Actually, it couldn't, Qld elected an LNP Government, Labor in WA are making it easier for LNG projects to circumvent enviormental objections, we're still building roads, car parks and airports

At least Vote Green and try to pull back from the precipice, not that they are radical enough but it moves the Overton Window to allow the truly radical politcans we need to be heard!

Alas report after report seems to show the climate wolf is now through the door and in the house.

The deadly environmental toll of superyachts and private jets

https://climateandcapitalism.com/2024/10/28/the-deadly-environmental-toll-of-superyachts-and-private-jets/

The carbon footprint of a super-rich European, accumulated from nearly a week of using super yachts and private jets, matches the lifetime carbon footprint of someone in the world’s poorest 1 percent, a new Oxfam report shows. The study, Carbon Inequality Kills, tracks the emissions from private jets, yachts and polluting investments, amidst growing fears that climate breakdown is accelerating, driven largely by the emissions of the richest people.

So we know what the problem is we just dont want to Vote for politcans who'd do something about it.

Be it upon our own head for enabling this abhorrence to continue I guess.

Apologies for those giving a shit and voting Green to try to move the Overton Window, this isn't on you.
