Anyone aware of any significant limitations to #android #tv with a #screenReader? I currently have a tv based on FireTV but those are really few and far between in Europe, so lookingat eventual altrenatives in the #google TV space. Used to Talkback as I have an #android phone, just not sure if any significant apps are inaccessible?

@zersiax I don't know about apps, but my main complaint right now is there seems to be no way to adjust the voice. I can't even speed it up. I'm using a Sony A80L, I believe it's called, so other TVs might not have this problem. I know that's not exactly what you asked about, but for me, it's a serious enough limitation that I don't like to use the rest of the interface. My family uses an Apple TV for all our streaming instead, so I rarely interact with Google TV itself.

@alexhall @zersiax Odd, my Bravia has the same talkback and tts options as my phone, voices, speed, pitch, etc

@dhamlinmusic @zersiax Really? Maybe there was an update. We've had this for a year or so.

@alexhall @zersiax Had mine since 2020, had the options from day one, though Bravia is higher end Sony so maybe that's it.

@dhamlinmusic @zersiax Possibly. Still, I'll have to check again. At least Florian can shop without as much worry about basic speech customizations being absent.

@alexhall @dhamlinmusic @zersiax I had to change language from whatever the default was to English US to see all the different voices on the Google TV streamer, maybe it’s the same on your TV. The only app that is not accessible enough for me is Plex unfortunately.

@serrebi @alexhall @dhamlinmusic Lol amusingly my choice is mostly hemmed in by the fact I can't really do any bigger than a 50-inch, which is what I currently have. A TCL does seem best bang for buck by far, obviously that wouldn't have a system screenreader as everything is Google TV at that point. For Prime TV that has worked relatively well, so I'd be curious to see how Android TV does

@zersiax @serrebi @alexhall TCL may have a system screen reader, Google tv is just renamed android tv, they need a way for the screen reader to work outside the os and app screens.

@zersiax expect lags. On most android TV boxes and TV-s, the talkback experience has been quite laggy for me.

@zersiax I have a Sony Bravia, I mainly use the system screen reader, because that works outside of the OS screens, and does not need to be shut off for apps like Hulu that have their own TTS, and have #talkback on the accessibility shortcut for apps that work with that but not the system screen reader, Max for example. All the major streaming apps work with one or both, a few things like HiDive are not the best but are workable. I heard TCL is one of the best Android TV deployments if you want to spend less than you'd pay for a Sony, also the new Google TV box is going to be the same experience, and has more memory than most smart TV, but will not have a secondary screen reader.

@dhamlinmusic yeah... my main thing is that I want to be able to change the TV's settings itself independently and switch between plugged in sources etc. and not just deal with smart tv apps, so while a streaming stick/box would cover me for about 90% I'd miss the occasional other thing

@zersiax Yeah, that's where the system screen reader is great, it reads the guide and things on the antenna input, and some other places where I’m not sure talkback would, the one I have is from 2020, it's currently on Android TV OS 10, started on 8, while a few versions behind it has upgraded any time it was at risk of falling out of support.

@dhamlinmusic yeah...I'd think Talkback would on a full-on Google tv-based TV, but that's the kind of thing I'd love to find more clarity on

@zersiax Yeah that's what I have, Sony Bravia UHD something or other from 2020, Android TV OS 10, Google TV and Android TV are the same they just renamed it.
