Congrats on writing a post on antisemitism that is incredibly antisemitic.

Some of the antisemitic tropes:

• Starting off talking about how this is about the Israel/Gaza war rather than what happened in Amsterdam

• Blaming Muslims (aka Arabs) for the antisemitic attacks, rather than taking account for the Christian/white Dutch people

• Ignoring all the antisemitism already present in Amsterdam and pretending this is a one off occurrence

• Talking about Jews as a "religion" rather than as a People

• Implying that antisemitism is because of "the media" (aka Jewish control of the media)

• Talking about Trump and other geopolitical issues, once again framing this as a "geopolitical" issue rather than antisemitism.

• Talking about pro-Palestinian protests, framing antisemitism as silencing Palestinian voices.

You could have said everything you said without the antisemitism, but you chose this road instead.

From my side, and as a counterpoint to the prev reply guy, I thought this was a decent outline of the events, hasbara narrative, pushback from citizen journalists and kneejerk from the right wing. I don't see the wholesale antisemitism the prev commenter identifies, although there's some conflation of Jewishness and Israeliness, particularly around the assertion that Jews deserve be able to take vengeance for Oct 7th, and that Israel can unilaterally determine this.

@anilmc Well said. Yes, I saw signs of that pretty quickly even in the opening of that video. However, I am still going to give his channel a try for the Nederlands oefening and to try and better understand the Dutch equivalent of toxic lad culture. I hate the pranks and the fireworks and yes the racism, but I love learning about the culture, from high to low. Thanks for the comment!

@anilmc In that last section, my intention was to portray the difficulty of convincing Jewish family and friends (a big part of my small audience) to back away from Zionist extremism; I have to appeal to their emotions because lefty political screeds won't work.

I don't want it to be unilaterally up to Israel, but they have the backing of the US and Dutch, so in a realpolitik way, it feels like that's all that matters. Helaas.

@amsterdameric I understand your rationale but I must differ, here.

Legal and normative systems that permit wronged parties to exact vengeance without strict definitions of proportionality are bad for the world and society, and allowing the moral bypass in order to appear sympathetic is a kind of apologia and appeasement rolled into one. /1

Legitimising the notion of revenge, you enable the dehumanisation of the targets of that revenge and seed vengeance for that revenge forwards and backwards in time i.e. justifying Oct 7 and disabling notions of justice and restitution in the process.

Also an erasure of anti and non zionist jews (tho they may not be your intended audience, they remain a possible audience) to suggest that Israel decide vengeance on their behalf, and while I take the clarifying point about north atlantic imperial ammunition and diplomatic cover making state to state restraints on Israel unlikely, there are other pressure points that are telling (military ground operations demographic and economic) which show weakening of the Israeli state. /3

Bottom line, I can see how you got to the point from compassion and comforting where you said that to your niece in late 2023 (while disagreeing) but I don't see how you included it in the piece, much less arguing the paragraph remains accurate today.

It kind of undercuts the very nuanced analysis of the amsterdam unrest and the discussion of the global context for it by immediately falling back into the hasbara narrative: oct7 was so horrific vengeance is justified/vengeance for the jews is enacted by Israel/Israel is unbound by proportionality /end

@anilmc Another point well taken. I also could have done a better job of connecting the idea of "vengeance" coming from ancient times (heroes vanquishing foes), which was in my mind, compared to justice, the more modern, tempered, sane collaborative approach. It was an idea I played with in my mind but didn't follow through on because I don't know all the history and needed to wrap it up after 3K words! Ik ben dankbaar voor jouw mening en tijd. Peace!
