@victorjavierlo for the last year and a half I've been using a Dell XPS 15 with i7 processor and Nvidia GTX 1050 running Ubuntu. Battery life could be better, but otherwise I can't complain (if you'd accept a broad definition of bioinformatics 🙂)

@miguelarbesu I was considering the XPS 14 i7 and NIVIDIA. But with 32GB and 2T it is almost 2400 euros ….

@victorjavierlo the current Apple laptops are good, but not necessarily a safe choice - the ARM CPU is still new enough that not everything works out of the box. For instance if you use conda, lots of bioconda packages don’t support it yet, nor does everything in conda-forge. There is the option of Rosetta CPU emulation, YMMV

@victorjavierlo Yea Dell XPS laptops have been great for me. I run Pop!_OS on them. Solid machines with pretty good battery life.

@Psy_Fer_ @pjacock In fact, I was debating between a Dell and a Mac. I’ve been a Mac user for 20 years, but I’m not sure if it’s time to switch—especially considering the price

@Psy_Fer_ @pjacock I need computational power, but my computer is very old… I mainly work on transcriptomics, RNA-seq, and scRNA-seq. For example, I tried running a WGCNA on my old computer, but it was impossible. I have two workstations in the lab where I do the alignment.

@victorjavierlo @pjacock I run a lot of test pipelines on my laptop. Even nanopore basecalling with the GPU. Then I have a workstation in my home Office, and then of course connection to various HPC and servers. As a Dev machine the dell is great and can get things done in a pinch. But realistically you should be doing heavy analysis on a workstation.

@victorjavierlo @Psy_Fer_ @pjacock if I was buying a non-Mac today it would be a @frameworkcomputer. Also really cool is @starlabssystems.

@jni @victorjavierlo @pjacock @frameworkcomputer @starlabssystems I wish I could get a framework but it's limited in Australia last time I checked

@Psy_Fer_ @victorjavierlo @pjacock @frameworkcomputer @starlabssystems check again? I haven’t gone through the full check out procedure but it looks like they’re available now! (And have been for some time — but just after I got an M1 Max MBP, which to be fair I remain very happy with.) (But won’t be as soon as something fails of course. 😭)

@jni Ahh you are right! they now ship to Aus and have everything in AUD. nice!

They are a bit pricy though compared to to a dell.

I think the only thing that would stop me buying one for my next laptop is they don't have Nvidia cards. I kinda need one for doing small tests of my tools. (cuda requirement). If they can somehow add those, it's an easy buy from me. I could upgrade the GPU too which would be awesome!
