I'm on a recently-updated macOS and I'm just hoping the site targets like IE-on-Windows XP or something, but is there any way to know? Is there a resource that will tell me “this site exploits CVE-??? and if you are on Safari 15.3 or later you won't be affected”?

Hi folks! A few days/weeks ago I read a blog post about #FOSS project (not company) founders sticking around, having forceful opinions, and ultimately preventing a project from making progress. Now of course I can't find it. Ringing any bells for anyone? #OpenSource

Brilliant article by Grace Tame, who wore a "Fuck Murdoch" t-shirt to the Australian of the Year ceremonies with the Prime Minister, and was predictably chastised for it.

TFW you tick something significant off your to-do list, but when you go to actually tick it off you realise you never added it to the list in the first place, and now you don't get the satisfaction of ticking it. 🥹

“No one who cared about the purpose of the Washington Post or the purpose of the Washington Post archive would have ever allowed the Ask The Post AI to be deployed. But the world has allowed the management of knowledge to be taken over by ignoramuses, and now the ignoramuses have built ignoramus machines in their own image, manufacturing non-knowledge on a scale previously unimaginable.”

@iFixit I know it’s kinda niche/luxury but I’d love a teardown/review of the Bang&Olufsen Beoplay H100 headphones. They make big claims about repairability and modularity, but I don’t trust these things until I see an #iFixit review!

Has someone built a masto instance that hoovers up all one's tweets from your personal data archive and reposts them, fully searchable, with the original tweet date? I'd love to be able to link to my old tweets without linking to that site. (And I'd love if others here did the same!)

In my humble but correct opinion, Mozilla should be doing two things and two things only:
Building THE reference implementation web browser, and
Being a jugular-snapping attack dog on standards committees.

I followed a breadcrumb trail on focus detection from the https://forum.image.sc forum to the micromanager source code to the supplemental info of @royerlab Royer et al 2016† and wow! "Part II: Image Quality Metrics in Theory and Practice" (starts on page 9) should really be its own paper, not a buried aside.

New #Apple #iPhone16 teardown from #iFixit (no masto? tsk tsk) is super interesting — including discussion of a new kind of adhesive that can be debonded by applying a voltage through it. That's cool!

7/10 repairability (provisional score) for an iPhone? Big news indeed.

Hey @sundogplanets! Big fan of your work. 😊 I have a question: I've seen a lot of fears about Kessler Syndrome with the Starlink (etc) fleet, but no forecasts/simulations/probabilities etc. Do you know anyone who's worked or is working on some numbers? e.g. “at 20,000 satellites the expected value for the number of collisions without route adjustment is 10^{-3}, which goes down to 10^{-6} assuming course corrections with x% detection accuracy…”

If you use Qt from #Python (from any of its bindings like #PyQt or PySide or QtPy), read this excellent guide from @czaki on writing robust tests.
@czaki has repeatedly cleaned up the test suite for @napari, which often failed randomly in CI, and this post distills many of his learnings. I’ve found it super useful for my understanding of wtf was going on in our CI! 😂

“Who do you think are your main competitors, and how does that influence your research direction?”
👆actual question asked of a PhD student by their panel member. I am disgusted by this culture and by the fact that it is being taught to a new generation.
For a while I had fooled myself that we had moved past this. I see no competitors, only potential collaborators. But this episode reminded me that I am part of a small minority.

Ok so I'm fucking done with streaming generally and #AppleMusic specifically. The greyed out songs are actually purchases from the iTunes days, supposedly DRM-free. But #Apple won't sync them because I’ve moved countries? Fuck that shit.
Any recommendations for DRM-free music stores, and for music library management on #macOS and #iOS? (Bonus points for #Linux!) I know of bandcamp but even vaguely mainstream selection is lacking. (Edit: should be local-first/local-only.)

I'm looking for an introduction to someone at @igalia if any of my masto-peeps knows someone? Maybe @astrojuanlu? I want to replicate the Igalia model (as presented by Valerie Young in her excellent "Inside Igalia" talk https://popularresistance.org/inside-igalia-scaling-a-co-op-beyond-100-members/) for scientific image analysis but as a lifelong academic, I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. 😅 So I would suuuuper appreciate some help! 🙏 #FOSS #CoOp
