Hi friends! Art and design major, studying social media here at the university of Michigan, and here’s a picture of me manipulating waste plastic to create something reminiscent of unwieldy telephone chords and the final product it was used for. This is a school project that helped us think of our creative process, exhausting all of the ways that we can work with waste plastic.
The final piece is called “Watermelon Phone”, and it’s meant to start a conversation around single use plastics. This project highlights the way that single use plastics (ie. bottle, fork, candy wrappers, etc) are superficially altered to fit our needs, then become useless, and are more complicated than helpful when trying to recycle it. Just as this Watermelon Phone can only uselessly receive a signal through the hanger without a dial function, we can receive the single use from the plastic without giving back to the earth in return.

@anasti Your Watermelon Phone project touches a subject (the fate of disposable plastic) which the researcher Max Liboiron has done some deep work on. https://maxliboiron.com/ . Her perspective on trash mixes academic research and a Canadian First Nations background.

@jmeowmeow Oh my gosh! Thank you for sharing relevant research to the work that I’m doing at school! I will read through this (once I catch up on my homework today and tomorrow) and I look forward to the connections that I’ll draw from it to continue incorporating sustainability in my own work!

@anasti Max Liboiron is the Real Deal. And I know her work at second hand through a Sunday online discussion group that often talks about how to organize sustainable human systems.
Have a good catch-up day! I may have some of that myself.

@jmeowmeow this is a response to both your replies-- Did you have a catch up day for schoolwork? Are you also a student? the hoodie in your pixel art is reminiscent of a university, and thank you for sharing your work!

@anasti I am a 1987 graduate of the University of Washington and I did not in fact do a catch-up day on the weekend, but I had a mostly successful work catch-up day today.

@anasti Some more Max Liboiron, this is an art / conceptual art project making use of trash, salt, and glass. Max's project, "Salt-Winning", is Chapter 5 of "Transmissions"

@anasti The Fediverse is a multiple realities place more than most, depending on how you connect (home server) and how you reach out.
I feel welcome but slightly lightweight on Hachyderm. I might sign up for a botsin.space account to run my side project PixieReport as a Mastodon bot.
Reputedly, Mastodon chat is a tedious place to come from Black Twitter, because it's harder to control unhelpful interactions.
