Why does it seem that there are a bunch of French speaking bots appearing on mastodon.social? All on the #introduction tag.

@jrsofty It seems like they're all students of a specific course, likely https://moodle.utc.fr/enrol/index.php?id=2796 probably taught by @stph . I've encountered a similar situation before as well: in May there was #WSUCOMP7025, referring to https://hbook.westernsydney.edu.au/subject-details/comp7025/ , where students appeared to have been instructed to create accounts on general instances of their choice, using their institutional emails (I'm an instance admin and I can see that).

@austin @stph That's good news! I follow the #introduction tag and was simply surprised to see them appearing suddenly. Glad to see the admins are on top of things 😁.

Thank you for letting me know.

@jrsofty @austin Thank you Austin, you have seen right :)

During most of my courses I ask the students to publish their work, using a local radio (Graf'hit) and decentralized social media (Peertube & Mastodon). The phenomenon observed few days ago was during this course : https://librecours.net/courses/we01/

Toot

Written by Stéphane Crozat on 2024-10-21 at 09:29

@jrsofty @austin

The three main objectives of the exercise are :

  1. they discover other channels of communication than the GAFAM ones (at least once !)

  1. they work with the objective of sharing real interesting info with others (not just a "fake" work for a teacher)

  1. it might interest people for real (even if the are beginners on the subject they work on) and/or they might receive real help

If you have comments on this approach, please feel free to share, I am open :)

@stph @austin very cool idea. What education level is this? I have to admit my ability to read French is limited to where English overlaps or where the English term is adopted, even so it looks like it is teaching communications?

In any case, now that I'm aware that such classes exist I'll be much less surprised. 😁

All the best to your students.
