Toot

Written by Roy Tanck on 2024-10-19 at 16:03

I've been using #Linux as my main OS for years, and need to reinstall my laptop soon. With Ubuntu focusing on Snap, I'm not sure I want to simply go with 24.04.

Can anyone recommend a Debian-based distro that offers a recent, clean version of Gnome? Preferably newer than what Debian Bookworm comes with?

@roytanck Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, but they have banned Snap and rely on Flatpak like everyone else.

Or does it have to be something Debian-based? Then I can only warmly recommend Fedora. Much more up-to-date with all packages and faster updates, and still as stable as a rock.

@unixviking @roytanck

Mint is a good choose, just have to rip off cinnamon and install gnome on top of it.

Other option, strip off snap yourself of Ubuntu.

But I think that work the shot about Fedora.

@unixviking Mint is based on Ubuntu, which I think still makes it Debian-based? But I'd prefer to use Gnome over Cinnamon.

There are a couple of things that I want to be able to run that seem very focused on Debian, so I'd prefer to stick with that.

@roytanck Simply install the Gnome desktop environment for Mint after: sudo apt install gnome

That's all.

@roytanck I am running Debian on my desktop and it's been so good. You can always install the few things you really need a more recent version of yourself? Although tbh I barely need to do that, if at all.

@dvk Yeah, I'm starting to lean towards plain old Debian. I love shiny new things, but stability is underrated.

@roytanck I came here 4 years ago after getting fed up with the constant updates that Arch gave me and have been very happy with the move. Shit just works, seemingly forever. Can go weeks without my system changing under me at all.
