"The lady at the charity shop today told me she wishes ppl wd clear out their kids' old toys in the lead up to Xmas rather than after because she always sees parents in the days before Xmas looking for toys for their little ones who might be strapped for cash. She said there's rarely anything in before, but they get many toys after.
If you know your child is going to get lots of presents for Xmas this year, by clearing out early you could make another child's Xmas a lot more special."

@CableSt My daughter is aces at doing this with my grands! And they don’t expect new in the box toys either. She’s made it fun all the way around, what can we give and what treasures will mom find!

@CableSt Parents could involve their kids in such pre-Christmas giving....

@CableSt As a charity shop volunteer I wholeheartedly agree. We're looking for good-quality, saleable donations of toys, books, winter clothing, Christmas decorations, etc. Now is the time to do that clear-out!
Please make sure donations are in saleable condition, though. Sadly we get a lot of broken, stained, dirty, and otherwise unsaleable goods that end up in the bin - and we do try our hardest to clean anything that we can make saleable.

@CableSt
We used to offer our kid 20p per item for any books or toys that were no longer wanted. Always worked a treat! We would then take them to the charity shop.

@CableSt This definitely needs to be done with the kids consent, or you're teaching them that those things aren't theirs, they just get to play with them until you get bored of them.

@fishidwardrobe @CableSt Some people are getting their kids more toys than they can possibly play with. They get the kids a whole toy store's worth of stuff. Some of that stuff gets unwrapped and never touched again.
Some people are holding onto old toys that their kids have not played with in years because they have the space to do that.
I don't think that the original post is about snatching toys out of your child's hand and giving them to the charity shop.

@sepdroid @CableSt No, but. I know parents who just "decide" to throw out old toys. As if they belonged to them.

@fishidwardrobe @sepdroid @CableSt
I always bring my daughter into the decision making by asking her to do the collecting. Books, clothes, toys. Consent can be built into a teachable moment, I think, about sharing what you don't need with those around you.

@CableSt ...but since they don't have their new toys yet, the rich kids would be livid to have the old one removed prematurely ?

@darkoneko @CableSt When was this thread about rich kids and their behavior?

@CableSt That's what we do every year. Our kids know that before any new toy can enter the house, old ones (in very good shape) must be donated to our local help group in November or early December.
