(And, yes, I have screwed up a couple of times this week and not done this because I was so horrified.)

seeing people posting about the current US mess with "don't CW this". I understand the sentiment — folks should be horrified.

But. DO CW that. Please.

first of all, even if everyone is as horrified as you would like them to be — we can't all keep that level for four years. We can't.

second, other people are dealing with their own shit. they may have different levels of tolerance than you.

For both these reasons, please allow others the tools to control their level of Doom.

Wait wait wait. Are there still prewar school buildings in England? In state schools?

(I think the Garrudain is using "post-war" to mean "JUST after the war". But we're still post war now. That's how it works.)

sigh. watching the new incarnation of Inspector Dalgleish. and we have the old chestnut of 'anarchist' terrorists.

I suppose it could be worse — it could have been incest.

It's interesting that superheroes are sometimes "Captain …" but rarely any other military rank.

You don't see Brigadier Justice or Vice-Admiral Molecule or Lieutenant Vengeance.

I don't think Corporal Punishment or Private Investigator count, either.

Venerable SF writer Spider Robinson wrote a story called Satan's Children, in which a couple of very nice musicians go around the country dosing politicians and powerful people with a novel LSD variant that causes you to desperately want to tell the truth and fix the harm your lies have done.

This is an "all I want for Christmas" toot.

Tentative corollary to the tentative rule: if someone you love is the sort of person who, when upset, makes themselves feel better by taking it out on others: you can stay there and take it if it's helping them.

But you always, always, always have the option of apologising for whatever it is they think you did and walking away. Go for a walk. Whatever. Come back and talk when they are calmer.

A tentative new rule for #ActuallyAutistic social relations of any sort: you are not responsible for other people's emotions°. Even if you love them very much. And you probably can't help them deal with them.

° (You can be responsible for something you did that caused emotions. Different thing.)

I'm open to thoughts here. I struggle with this one: if someone I care about is in pain, I feel guilty if I can't help.

Extremely disturbing — and so detailed that it's difficult to discount — account of how basically every trusted news source is lying about this one news story, and instead following the disinformation given out by the Israeli government.

Actual fake news. How do we talk about this without sounding like a right wing conspiracist? How do we proceed without a trustable news source?

I think a useful question to ask about a new government is, who are they for? Who are they helping? Not in what they say, but what they actually do.

With the scrapping of untested winter fuel allowance, and now the proposed increase in tuition fees, it's clearly not pensioners or students.

They talk a lot about "working people". I'm pretty sure they mean something else by that than I do. Wait and see if they shaft them, too, I suppose…

(For the record, since the internet is a device that destroys nuance: Mark is so much happier since they stopped playing the part of Mary. That's what I wanted for him – to be happy – and it worked out. I'm delighted for him.)

I have personal experience of this. (Mark is not his real name, and doubly so Mary, of course.)

I have a lot of memories of Mary. I don't begrudge him holding onto his secret, even though we were very close. I don't have any trouble calling him Mark, now.

But those memories – thinking of when 'she' and I were as thick as thieves – and then feeling each time "no, that was really Mark, a man"?

That's fucking hard.

I'm not, personally, scared or confused or angry. But I can see it.

In some ways I "get" transphobia. Not the hate, but the fact that they are clearly scared and confused.

A lot of it is "my personal understanding of the world is the only correct one", and I don't have sympathy for that, either.

But. We learn about what "boys" and "girls" are at such a young age. The lessons we learn first are the hardest, most painful to unpick.

And hardest of all is to take all the memories of Mary and stamp over them "no, that was Mark the whole time".
