@JDzed @ian @cstross I think the issue here is that Cybersecurity Awareness Month actually predates the widespread use of the other meaning of the abbreviation by quite a bit.

@Hazzbenn CSAM is the acronym for Child Sexual Abuse Material, aka kiddy porn.

Using it on any other context can cause... issues.

@ian Likewise Confocal Scanning Acoustic Microscopy. We spent years using the abbreviation CSAM in my workplace.

It’s a semiconductor failure analysis technique, and a pretty common one.

@meedstrom @trollball @ian It doesn't need to be "won back". It's not a slur. It's just a term that is highly unfortunate, but that needs to exist. Nothing is gained by muddying the waters here by trying to reclaim something that wasn't lost in the first place.

I mean going by this thread it looks like people think you can't use that acronym for any other purpose now, so it is lost. By winning it back I just mean making it OK to use for other things, even though it is also used for an unsavory thing.

@meedstrom @trollball @ian But the thing is, it ISN'T ok. The term CSAM is needed, and is important, and is unpleasant. And if you try to use it for something else, it will always bring that unpleasantness to mind. There's no way to "win that back".

You can do this with a slur, because that is a frivolous term that can be reclaimed. But this isn't frivolous, it is important and necessary. You can't erase that other meaning.

@meedstrom @trollball @ian Like, you can't name a food item "shit", or "poison", because that is not an association you want with your food. But that doesn't mean you should now start trying to do that to "win it back". That's just a fact. Use a different word, there are lots of them. Those ones are taken.

A better example would be "spam", which used to just mean a particular meat product.
