I'm tweaking Episode Limit enforcement again.
In the current version, it will not delete episodes that you've manually added, even when they're past the limit.
By popular demand, in the next update, Episode Limit will ALSO not delete:
This will generate new complaints that it's "not working”. But believe me, the feedback is worse now!
This feature is so hard to align with people's expectations in practice.

@overcastfm the biggest problem with the current version is it randomly deletes episodes while playing. Hope this gets fixed 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

@overcastfm Can you make the Chapter Artwork tapable so you can expand it and zoom in on it? It’s way too small that way it is now.
Tapping on it and getting the show notes/chapters isn’t ideal imo

@overcastfm ahh so that’s what was going on! It’s be great if episode limit was able to be changed globally. I notice mine were set to 1 which caused the deletions to happen. Maybe that’s the default? If so that feels like an aggressive default. Maybe I set it to that at some point in the past? Regardless it’s a big pain to go back and manually change them all to a new value.

@overcastfm Thanks. My particular pain point was if I had episode limits set to "1", was listening to that episode and a new episode dropped, the episode I was listening to would stop playing and be deleted. Increasing episode limits fixed the symptom. Sounds like you have the problem correctly diagnosed.

@overcastfm Maybe those episodes that are being exempted need a visual indicator so it’s not just a count that doesn’t match.

@overcastfm I strongly suggest then it clearly explains somewhere what it actually deletes, because it is not clear to me at all with these exceptions.

@overcastfm deleting partially played episodes could be a nitpicky detail setting.
🤪

@overcastfm “Hard to align” is correct. I was reading the comments and found myself agreeing with two conflicting ones. 🙂 Thanks for your efforts.

@overcastfm I would really just like OPML import and export to be a thing again. Please and thank you!

@overcastfm First thing I checked was that this was still off for me, heh! I never want any app to auto delete anything. I can imagine how much of a mess this feature is for expectation management.

@overcastfm as a user who was very surprised to see the behavior change last version, I was also expecting/relying on episodes that were manually starred or added to playlists be exempt from deletion. I would have been much less upset if the episodes were deleted from storage but still appeared in playlists as ready to stream/download.

@overcastfm oh, so this is why my playlists kept deleting themselves.
I appreciate the work you’re putting in. Hang in there!

@overcastfm Aha! That’s why the new version kept deleting stuff…
Yeah, in my mind (which I of course get isn’t everybody) the “Keep X episodes” only applies to episodes that are automatically downloaded.
The changed described there seems sensible. Maybe consider an option for how long a partially played episode should be kept?

@overcastfm And I'm on the other end I want auto delete to be vindictive. I currently find it to be not deleting anything under any circumstances and I'm blowing out my storage every other day and I have to manually nuke lots of casts.

@overcastfm the problem with not deleting “partially played” episodes is I end up with gigabytes of eps with only post-roll ads left to play. (I can’t imagine anyone listens to these? Why do they exist?)
The only solutions I can think of for this are outrageously complex ways of detecting whether the content at the end of the episode is something the user might actually want to listen to - either using AI or crowdsourcing. Both bad options, probably.

@overcastfm any chance adding this to nitpicky settings since it’s all on device? I’ve ran into the issue where it deletes the episode I was listening to because a new one just came out but giving a setting may alleviate that.

@overcastfm
I’m a completionist so I have never used this feature and have thus never had any problem with it.
To everyone complaining about stopping the podcast before listening to the end credits; just get into the habit of fast forwarding or swiping the timeline to the end of each episode when you’ve had enough. I’ve always done that anyway to trigger the auto delete function.

@overcastfm instead of adding more options that are not understood
In the settings, add an example list with al variants and ask the user which ones to delete. Generates goo testcases as well

@overcastfm will you add a „keep episode“ feature? I use „Partially played“ for this now and would miss a way to explicitly keep an episode.

@overcastfm Can we have a setting to remove the limit altogether? I don't need it. At all. I don't get why is it set for all podcasts. The only way to fix this is go and raise it one by one.
I missed three months of a particular podcast because I got a bit behind and thought they just died.

@overcastfm Is the widget blank artwork bug in the queue to be fixed? iOS 18.0 and iPhone 16 Pro Max and the bug still persists (this is a bug that has been around since July).

@overcastfm I’d love it if playing from top of the current playlist after the episode at the bottom is finished worked. I still have this problem.

@overcastfm can you make it configurable? The way you describe it makes it completely unusable for me. I have podcasts that get published daily with daily information. I don't always get to listen to them in time. I always want the latest published episode as the information is otherwise stale and not important anymore.
For example, I have a podcast that reports about the latest events in Ukraine and gives background on these as well with experts. I would have to manually delete an episode from September 13 so it would load the newest episode from September 20 - because I never listened to the episode and i only want the latest episode.
My expectation would be that it would always keep the latest n episodes depending on what's configured. I thought it was pretty clear.

@overcastfm Last version causes lots of mid episode errors. It suddenly stops while playing, it remembers the point where it did it, but when I press play, the episode starts over. Could it be caused by this change?

@overcastfm can anyone tell me where to enter username and password for protected feeds?? Or was that removed / left on the cutting room floor / coming soon like OPML export??

@overcastfm This is unfortunate. Trying to align this with people’s expectations means breaking the feature apparently. If I set an episode limit to 3, I expect there to only ever be 3 episodes showing for that podcast. Any time I see more than 3, the feature is broken.
I listen to a lot of podcasts that are current events based. If I only play one for 5 minutes, its content is no longer relevant a week later. Episode limits must be able to delete partially played or it is a useless feature.

@overcastfm unfortunately too late for me as I was not going to go back again and re-download years of podcasts again. But a good step for you - and again, perhaps poll users on usage type questions before making such drastic steps. Best of luck to you!
