I'm currently playing Cyberpunk 2077 and constantly wondering why they spent millions on the silly open world when the main campaign would be a perfect 20-hour linear game.

@octavinavarro Night City always makes me feel like the map designers did a fantastic job creating a game world, which the quest designers then were unable to make use of.

@yora Right. I don't think they will ever figure out how to make these giant open worlds interesting.

@octavinavarro @yora Well hopes were riding on them because they DID pull that off with Witcher 3

@Wortex17 @yora I didn't love Witcher 3's open world either, but it felt better for sure. Maybe because it was sparser, like mini-hubs connected by roads.

@octavinavarro @Wortex17 @yora got an example of an open world you liked? Just curious what you'd thought well used. π

@das4ndi @octavinavarro @Wortex17 I think open-world is one of the worst things that has happened to videogames ever.
There are a few games that do work well with an open world. Morrowind and Kenshi have a gameplay structure that is based on an open-world environment.
But most open-world games really just want to be interactive movies. Which really should never be set in open worlds.

@yora @das4ndi @Wortex17 Kenshi is a great example. It works so well because the challenge of traversing the world is the main mechanic.

Thx, never tried that one, will check that out. π

@das4ndi @Wortex17 @yora Hmm... I think the only ones that work well are those with a smaller scope and specific zones that feel very different. The most obvious example would be Dark Souls 1.

@octavinavarro @das4ndi @Wortex17 Dark Souls 1 is a lot like a Metroidvania in that regard.
And very much not in the interactive movie category.

@octavinavarro @Wortex17 @yora thx. For me the gold standard open worlds was always the Gothic games (Gothic 1&2 are in my top 3 all time favourites).
So far that they ruined many other open worlds for me. Couldn't play Elder Scrolls until Skyrim... π

@das4ndi @Wortex17 @yora Yes! I discovered Gothic games very late but they are so good!

@octavinavarro @das4ndi @Wortex17 Gothic 1 is the best open world RPG ever made.
Back in 2001. And all the other open world RPGs that came out after it always were a huge disappointment to me, because they couldn't get the simple basics right that Gothic had already solved years and decades before.

@octavinavarro @yora think I read a post mortem of a dev somewhere that was partly because they were overambitious and had to shrink story & quests it to make it to the end.
On the other side: you need to build a big city to make that cp feeling work, even if it's not fully used.
Wouldn't feel like a big futuristic city when there was just one Mega building. Even if you only enter two throughout the game...
And at least its not artificially 'filled' as most Ubisoft Open Worlds.

@octavinavarro I often feel like open world games are made bigger than ever just because they can! I donβt feel like you can beat GTA Vice City or San Andreas for open world. They were relatively small and everything was crammed in so it felt alive!
