The Taxpayers Union's Auckland Ratepayers' Alliance (See https://www.taxpayers.org.nz/ratepayers_alliance_launch ) continues to prey on the public's poor grasp of how expensive long term public, sea and vandalism resistant infrastructure is.

Now perhaps if councils could employ engineering staff in house, but the TPU scolds councils for paying professional salaries over 100k...

@abartlet Yeah did wonder why it was steps and not a ramp for wheelchair access but then would a wheelchair cope with that beach anyway?

@zl2tod @abartlet well not sure if that was a joke but SEA grade stainless steel is very expensive and anything else rusts in days

I was commenting on a this a few weeks ago in a thread on the cost of interisland ferry infrastructure. It would make this kind of nonsense ...

"I think ratepayers would agree $8000 per step is just too much"

... much harder to pull off if news media insisted on reporting per-year figures. In this case $7515 per year over 35 years.

Also, instead of just reporting final figures, I think it would also help to provide some kind of breakdown of where that money is going. It does seem to be absurdly expensive to get anything built in this country, and we need to find the financial leaks in our infrastructure pipelines and plug them.

Of course, TPU types don't really care about that, they just use "wasteful spending" accusations to knobble policy they disagree with, and lower budgets to justify cutting taxes/ rates.
