Mastodon database sizes are like snowballs rolling down an infinite mountain.
Is it better to preserve our local instance archive of the Fediverse as we see it?
Or to prune that data and hope the original instances stay available?

@james I voted prune. If I wanted things to remain permanent I’d put effort into hosting it myself (since that seems like the ONLY way of true permanence). I’d be fine to expire things here after a year.

@Ryanbigg to be clear, your posts would never be removed. It's all about the posts from remote accounts.

@james Mastodon pulls in a lot of data that is not of interest to anyone on your instance. Look into tootctl. There are a lot of thing that you can safely prune without anyone noticing.

@pointlessone check out the "context" link in the post, I have some specifics in mind when asking the question 😉

@james I voted prune, but a couple of questions: are you able to do dry runs to see how much days we’ll actually save? What happens if you shift the date range? Like 60 days for the Toots of accounts no one interacts with but then 2 years for those that people do?

@james if I had to decide I would go for prune. It's interesting to have the full story and context of everything but let's be honest: few to no people need all this data, it's transient for the most of us.
In my case I usually just bookmark and fav post I want to keep track and "agree"/"reward ", if I need to for longer I do not expect to be persisted on ruby.social forever. I'd use archive.org if I really need it for longer than the existence of this instance or the fediverse itself.
