I will say, though, that Stats has gotten on the boat - albeit late - and Stat Ed is doing some really exciting things with coding + concepts.
Meanwhile, I am worried that these "Intro Data Sci" classes are sometimes really "Intro R" or "Intro python" - which are valuable but not a replacement for Stat.
So folks are being taught the tools of data analysis without a core understanding of important concepts like sampling variability, significance/signal, and so on. 🤷♀️

@kellybodwin 💯
Programming is the tool, data science / stats is about creating meaning.
reminds me of the classic linguistics example of "Colorless green ideas sleep furiously"

@hye @kellybodwin I really wish more “classic” comp-sci programs also included #rstats (or DS-ish #python) because
1: some of those students want to be DS, they’re just going about in a way that doesn’t emphasize the core skills
2: the rest WILL be working with DS (or business analysts) in the real world, and need to know how to talk to them effectively.
