My independent study kiddos are currently choosing #rstats #tidyverse issues to try to address "Dev Day" style.
I am currently DYING laughing because a student just chose an bug that, if we dig in to the PR history, was originally introduced in 2020...
... by me. π

Every year I am sad to see that only like 3-5% of Cal Poly students wear Halloween costumes to school. π’
Is this a Gen Z thing or a Cal Poly thing?
In any case, Happy Halloween to those who celebrate! πππ

I took so many notes at the @quarto_pub session at #PositConf2024 that I went ahead and threw them online instead of live-tooting:
https://kbodwin.github.io/paRticles/posts/positconf_quarto/
(But I did take the notes on my phone and I am not Gen Z Phone Fluent.... ow my thumbsβ¦.)
Thank you @rfortherestofus, @minecr, Meghan Hall, and Andrew Bray for the extremely clear and actionable tips!!!

ICYMI: Slides and materials for #PositConf2024 are being shared here:

It's up to speakers to upload/link their slides, so not a complete set, but still a great resource!

"The University approach to creating Data Science programs is often to take Computer Scientists and Statisticians and put them together and assume that will work.
But those people are often entrenched in their professional identities. We need people who are actually invested in Data Science to teach Data Science."
The point about letting go of a particular professional identity is well taken. One can be both DS and CS or Stat, but it's not automatic. π€ͺ

I will say, though, that Stats has gotten on the boat - albeit late - and Stat Ed is doing some really exciting things with coding + concepts.
Meanwhile, I am worried that these "Intro Data Sci" classes are sometimes really "Intro R" or "Intro python" - which are valuable but not a replacement for Stat.
So folks are being taught the tools of data analysis without a core understanding of important concepts like sampling variability, significance/signal, and so on. π€·ββοΈ

Good morning #PositConf2024 folks!
Andrew Bray and I are planning to grab dinner and chat about possibly hosting @useR_conf in the Bay Area in the next few years.
Let me know if you're based in CA and want to come brainstorm with us - or even better, if you have any experience organizing UseR! and could bring your wisdom!

It's so cool to use Open Source and to get to just hang out and do my own data science thing and regularly recieve incredible new free tools. π₯°
