Two years ago, #EDPS embarked on a pioneering journey launching a pilot project of two decentralised social media platforms: #EUVoice & #EUVideo.

18 May will mark the end of the project. Time to review the results of this successful story.

@EDPS this is really unfortunate, to say the least.

I appreciate that you embarked on this project. Thank you for taking that risk!

The fact that all of the European Commission cannot find an agency to own it and continue maintaining it is unfathomable.

Especially in the context of how digital sovereignty gets so much lip-service from the Commission.

EC's priorities seem upside-down.

Unfortunate, but extremely par for the course.

Reading between the lines, it seems that people in charge of funding don't understand the point of self-hosted social media. They just think "more/easier followers on commercial centralised services" and don't think any further about how those follows are manipulated and held hostage through algorithms etc.

@FediThing @pettter @rysiek @EDPS they'll probably "successfully" move to 'federated' threads 🤮

Yeah, I'm wondering how many others will be "fediwashing" their accounts by moving to Meta's platform.

Yeah great term. But wait a second, I remember suggesting to people people who think the Threads integration is a great thing that organizations moving their accounts to Threads was a likely outcome if the largest Mastodon instances federated, and they assured me that there was nothing to worry about on this front! So how can this be happening? 🤔

By the way, let's not get too depressed about this. Remember when Protonmail made an announcement they were withdrawing from the Fediverse, but then they came back again a while later?

At the very least, the EU now knows that the Fedi exists, that they have an alternative if decision-makers start being uncomfortable with Meta etc. When people have tried something they are way more likely to do it again.
