People mad at nVidia both because they're making $500+ GPUs and because those GPUs have things like frame quadruplers, due to having massive amounts of ML (primarily on the chip for other markets that use the same silicon).

The expensive GPUs exist for people who own a 240, 360, or even 480Hz monitor. For which it is totally reasonable, when playing a slower paced story game, to want max visuals and interpolation to keep high smoothness. Not everything is e-sports.

Is the DoJ/FTC of the opinion that parents own their children (up to age 16) or is their language about games just terrible?

The ban is "purchase loot boxes in their video games without a parent’s affirmative express consent".

When I was a kid, the only banking you could get before age 16 (maybe even 18) did not provide a working card number so you could not buy things over the phone (later online). Also... if you don't want your kids spending money, don't give them discretionary money?

Definitely feeling the absence of AnandTech in offering a written piece that provides all the information and none of the fluff about what nVidia explained to the press (during a six hour session) at CES. Quite a few things that will need to wait to be tested on final hardware (and compared to previous generations) but this feels like some new foundations for future engine updates (hopefully matched by AMD/Intel/Sony/Xbox in the next few years). https://youtu.be/tuf4rvQld6c

Sudden realisation (while watching Ameku Takao & Apothecary Diaries): with the Judgement series stalled, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio should spin-off a show about the medics in Like a Dragon. We already have various interactions with shady doctors who patch up yakuza, massage/acupuncture staff, etc.

They could absolutely find a new (female?) protagonist there and explore a game that's not primarily about street fighting (while continuing to reuse the same sets built for the main series).

"I always play with RT off"

Cool, you're a retro gamer. Turing was released in 2018, bringing with it real-time RT via hardware acceleration, and it's 2025 today. So if you only play games designed around the constraints of that pre-2018 hardware then no shame on you but you're a retro gamer. You don't need to have opinions about new upcoming high fidelity games because they're not for you (and that's also fine).

I wonder what the internal tracking data says about install count and major patches for F2P titles. How many installs (mainly from inactive users) do you lose vs how many new installs do you gain from people returning for a big patch?

(This message brought to you by a 21GB Marvel Rivals patch and my decision to just uninstall the game as I'm not playing it right now.)

So the guys who are funding and taking part in the genocide in Palestine + the surrounding region want me to trust them that Tencent are actually really bad because... they may take contracts that are from the Chinese domestic military? The one that, unlike the US, generally stays near their own country?

Does this level of propaganda even play to a domestic US audience? You can't force the 2nd largest military power to forever be just your assembly line servants.

I'm excited for new DLSS models (a new type of model, not just incremental refinement of the training data - much room for advancements but also maybe regressions). But really I want to know if the RTX Mega Geometry hype is real. Nanite for RT geometry rather than requiring fallback meshes? That sound huge.

Looks like we get some early examples of how it works and all the SDK releases around the end of the month. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/dlss4-multi-frame-generation-ray-tracing-rtx-games/

Start the new year as you mean to go on: already almost a week behind schedule!

So here is my traditional post on what new computer and video games I played last year: https://blog.shivoa.net/2024/12/games-of-year-2024.html

The only one of these games I'd played more than the tutorial of before 2024 was Genshin. The only one of these games I have not now 100%ed the story content of so far is Genshin.

In January I'm going to have to blog about the rise of the single player RPG monetised like a multiplayer game (battle pass, skins, new characters, constant updates - full "live service") that has escaped from phones (something almost all of these games offer seamless play on despite being scoped like a AAA game).

Monster Hunter Wilds releases on Feb 28th 2025. Pre-purchases for the digital version of the game alone put it on the top 100 list of games by Steam revenue in 2024 (bottom half of the list, so not top 50). The only game on the list this year to not even be available this year. https://store.steampowered.com/sale/BestOf2024

I suspect Capcom have another "series reaches new sales milestone immediately upon release" on their hands here.

"Sure feels like I'm not making much of a dent in all these GamePass games I planned to dig into once work ended for the year and I had more time?!"

Also me: actively playing some ZZZ, HSR, Genshin, Nikki, and WuWa.

Who can possibly unravel this mystery?!

I realise this is a European developer and maybe we in Europe would be more familiar with it but I'm slightly surprised by how many US people who professionally covered games in the entire 30 years period since this was a new franchise have never heard of it. To me, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milestone_(Italian_company) is a developer everyone who plays driving games should know even if you don't still have tchotchkes related to this original series.

Tired: practicing Japanese by setting Chinese games to Japanese VO rather than Mandarin VO. 😴

Wired: keeping the Mandarin VO but setting the text/subtitle language to Japanese. 🤯

Oh cool, apparently the YT grifter who blames devs for "ruining modern video games with adding TAA and RT" has uploaded their latest video where I (and many other devs, DF personalities, etc) are "named and shamed".

This is another iteration of GamerGate, including alt-Right flocking to the "cause" to recruit. It's a hate group holding a fig leaf of "valid concerns" and if you engage in good faith with that, you are making the same mistake many did with the OG GG.

I don't understand why you'd take the position that you should never integrate a proprietary technology (like DLSS); that things like upscaling should never lead to duplicating integration work per-vendor (handing out different free options).

If someone made an upscaler that is, in all cases, clearly visually superior and with a lower memory & run-time cost than the competition for free, we'd all integrate just that (until it possibly fell behind due to lack of updates).

Slightly shocked that the most recent version of https://gpuopen.com/tressfx/ (ok, maybe not even the latest version, as apparent 5.0 is only available as a UE4 plugin with UE5 "coming soon"?! So the rest of us are on 4.1 forever?) still has for their comparison photos the 2013 Tomb Raider. From back when TressFX had a habit of making Lara's hair explode (which is included in the very comparison photo they use!) https://gpuopen.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/TR_Dry_06_TressFX.jpg

Games from 1995 I did not expect to get a sequel to in 2026 (and from the original developer, at least in a corporate sense as I've no idea how much of the old team is still there after so long). https://youtu.be/Jn90J1lM5WI
