I only just recently noticed that my blog post links weren't generating nice "cards" in Mastodon. I'd set up my Hugo blog to generate Twitter card metadata years ago, and I thought Mastodon pulled that same data, but either it never did and I missed it, or things have changed. It's easy to fix, you just need to include this line in your theme inside the section:

{{ template "_internal/opengraph.html" . }}

I added some gifs to demonstrate the kind of problem you can get using a ray from the camera component instead of from the player camera manager, under some simple camera lag settings changes.

Most of the advice you'll find online about doing camera calculations like "how do I get a ray from the camera" in #unrealengine are subtly wrong. Here's a simple guide on how to do it right: https://www.stevestreeting.com/2025/01/23/doing-unreal-camera-calculations-right/

I generally enjoy biking everywhere, except the rare days when I get horizontal sleet in the face and feel like I’ve had Botox 🥶

Yeah. 🙁 Literally the only reason I can do this is that I’m funding it from past successes (non-game in my case). I’m guessing a bunch of previously successful indies will do the same. But after that? 😕

I’m an ageing dude now, I don’t have to worry about a “future” career very much so I’m lucky. If I did, I’d definitely think twice about going all-in on the games industry. I tried when I was young & failed to get hired, & I think that was secretly a blessing

I must admit I’m having enormous, timely fun hitting Nazis in the nuts in The Great Circle. There’s a specific animation for it. Nice work, animator who made that one

I’d been keeping my abandoned Xitter account live solely to protect against imposters stealing the username, but you know what, I don’t even care anymore. Anyone still using that place should know better, so who gives a toss? Deleted.

OK I've turned off Rider's "Full Line local LLM completion" thing. It was useful sometimes, especially when dealing with tedious boilerplate, but it's become too annoying at jumping in when all I want is a variable name completion and Tab makes it spit something more complex in there. Sometimes it's right, but a lot of the time it's not and I'm tired of backspacing over it, on balance I think it's not a net positive. So ends my one use for (local) LLMs

I can’t understand people who leave a negative review on a niche little indie game where they kinda liked it but want to make a bunch of snarky points about how it could have been better. You’re not Roger bloody Ebert, and this isn’t a multi million pound company asking sixty plus dollars. Give them a break and just move on, ffs. Didn’t your Mum tell you that if you don’t have anything nice to say, say nothing at all?

Updated my blog post on manually positioning Niagara particles because having needed to use the Niagara debugger today, I noticed the setup I previously had would accidentally endlessly grow the number of particles, basically forever, if you re-used the systems. So that's fixed now. #unrealengine https://www.stevestreeting.com/2025/01/09/niagara-particles-setting-positions-manually/

Its one of those days for (re) realising that the systems you built are like that because you went a really roundabout way to get there, and when you think about it from first principles with the benefit of this hindsight there's a much simpler and better way to do it.

I'm mostly talking about programming. Mostly.

And this CPU didn’t have a fan, it didn’t even have a heatsink of any kind. Just a flat top open to the air, that was enough back then.

Sadly like most people who moved house a lot and didn’t have a lot of money I never kept any of this stuff, it got sold to fund the next thing or simply get it out of the way 🫤

On the other side of the room was this beauty; a PAL SNES connected to a CRT TV over SCART with a JP/US converter riser so it could be played at 60Hz (essential for SF2 and others). Hot shit at the time and grey import carts were eye wateringly expensive, but I was working by this time so that’s where the cash went (and on the PC obvs - Roland sounds cards especially)

It was a 386 33MHz with a Turbo button to downclock the CPU to 15Mhz so games designed for lesser machines didn’t run unplayably fast 😂

I used to really like playing board and tabletop games where the odds were completely stacked against you, there was a good chance your character would go mad or die before the end, and it was mostly about holding back entropy for a few moments longer before the inevitable collapse, but for some reason I find it hard to find the enthusiasm for them anymore 🤔
