Plenty of queer folk showing up on Pixelfed too! Can’t believe I’m seeing lots of gay selfies on an open-source social network 🤯 here’s hoping the gay community can finally kick Instagram 🤞 go and make people feel welcome! #pixelfed #queer #gay

I’m loving seeing these earnest little snapshots into people’s lives. The local feed on Pixelfed feels really wholesome. #pixelfed

The local feed on Pixelfed.social is full of new users posting for the first time. Why not go check them out? 😊

Really enjoying finding music on @mirlo ! It’s like a more streamlined version of Bandcamp that pays artists more money.

Would love to see more ways to navigate the catalogue and see user reviews, but the tagging system is already nice and it loads really fast!

Finished @violetblue ‘s incredible book “The Covid Safety Handbook” on the plane. I learned so much:

I’m really grateful that I can support some of my favourite open source projects and contributors this year.

Seeing many of my (proprietary) work apps filling up with useless AI garbage, it’s so exciting to see you making software that truly opens doors for people. Thank you for all of your hard work, especially in times when I couldn’t afford to pay for licences.

It’s amazing to see more companies releasing their apps on Flathub, Linux’s app store. I’ve recently spotted:

https://flathub.org/apps/io.anytype.anytype

https://flathub.org/apps/com.icons8.Lunacy

Both are verified and have come from the developers. How cool!

Also worth noting that turning on font hinting and antialiasing in GNOME Tweaks makes fonts look chef's kiss on these fractionally scaled resolutions (if those settings aren't already on for you)

Firefox, Chrome, Signal, Krita, Inkscape... my gosh, I've got so much more screen with the new fractional scaling option at 150%! And no fans going off either; it seems efficient and it all looks so crisp! My #Framework laptop feels like a whole new beast!

Well this was a pleasant surprise - I just updated to Fedora Linux 41 and fractional scaling is available out of the box! Everything looks really crisp, even Electron apps! That's fantastic!! Thank you!

Last night I was searching for engagement rings. Today my partner shows me an advert targeted to him on YouTube inviting him to custom make his ideal engagement ring.

This happened even with me using Firefox’s tracking protection, uBlock Origin, and declining cookies wherever I can.

That’s not just an invasion of privacy, that’s ruining the surprise! (Thankfully we’d already talked about it, but it’s still very creepy).

Sent my public #Pixelfed profile to my sister the other day. "Ohhh, what is this, is this like a social media where they don't track you? Because I am so tempted to give up Instagram. This is so cute!"

My sister is in no way a tech nerd or particularly big on data privacy, and has been a heavy user of Instagram for as long as I can remember.

There are so many people out there who want to post photos and videos important to them online, but are jaded by #Instagram.

There are so many injustices in the world to be upset over. It feels like we live in dark times.

However, this animated video by #Kurzgesagt gives us a reason to hope that humanity will write a better future.

A wonderful antidote to the doomscrolling you might be doing today.

It’s lovely to see Mastodon welcoming people with different access needs. @navigators is a new Mastodon instance set up to help blind people get the most out of Mastodon and the broader indie social web. Wishing the team all the best with their instance.

Ticked some satisfying things off the Icon Bear to-do list:

Although I don't have as much time to dedicate to the project as I used to, I'm still enjoying chipping away at it. Next up will be reducing the amount of time the app takes to start.

Tuned into the @inclusivedesign24 conference today!

Really enjoyed @ebuie 's talk on how we look at designing for older adults, and to what extent we'll experience the same barriers to technology when we're older. Really fantastic to hear from her lived experience, look at the data behind age-related health issues, and learn about the problems younger people are likely to face when they are older.

Just found out that one of my favourite artists, @djsabrina, has released a new album!

Cannot wait to lose myself in her world of euphoric house. If you’re new to her music and vaguely like electronic music, you are in for an unforgettable, emotional ride! I’ll be picking it up on #BandcampFriday

I love open-source software and I know there are some wonderful open-source design tools like Penpot. However, I only mentioned apps I genuinely use in my commercial workflow or which UX Designers will need based on typical client demands.
