just to be clear, i don’t hate you. my real enemies are ethereal, institutional; grand and unspeakable deities of our capitalist desolation. but as a values-driven programmer, i have high expectations of my peers in the craft. i want them to win, i want our expertise to be of public service, but goddamn can you stop sucking off libertarians and billionaires for like two seconds? making nice with crypto people rather than giving them swirlies at every opportunity was a strategic mistake

i actually am the type of dweeb that dreams of labor, it’s just, not labor that pays anything under capitalism

i feel like our social media options are more or less a variety of bear traps, and the fact that foss as a faction has nothing better than mastodon for this purpose illustrates the faction’s organizational and resource shortcomings. it is so much less a problem of, how do we architect an alternative, than answering, how do we raise institutions that could shepherd such a work?

i left bluesky for basically the same reason i left twitter. not because of nazis, not exactly (i left a long time ago), but because it was a place hopping with everything that is bad for my mental health

mastodon is like. the ten programmers i listen to and also most of my friends

i really like gemini (alt html for static web content). a static web forces you to center content, rather than wrapping it in dynamic bullshit. but i also really like treating the url bar like an assumed-consent package manager, but i probably only feel that way because i write web apps

do you ever think about how tomatoes and potatoes only reached europe after colonizing the americas, such that every tomato / potato european regional specialty is a product of colonialism

here’s the article i’m on about. it’s not bad, it’s just…

[#] Enshittification isn't caused by venture capital

https://pluralistic.net/2025/01/20/capitalist-unrealism/

… regulations aren’t what keep profiteers in line. profiteers are produced by a social and economic fabric that must be transformed.

my issue with cory doctorow is not so much anything i dislike, but that his prestige forbids him from saying anything not fundamentally incrementalist. interop doesn’t work because of IP law? what kind of pirate are you? yet, how could i expect such a public figure to speak out against power so dangerously? he has his own rent to pay.

“rebuilding the web we lost”

“back when facebook was good”

ugh. ugh! begone, foul nostalgia! facebook was never good, it was only ever at best useful despite massive social and material costs. the web, from bgp to dns, must be rebuilt for how wretched and covetous their realities are. imagine further, to genuine boons! there is no need to valorize the scraps of profiteers, cory

dweebs like “we’ll go live on mars” do not appreciate that zero years were spent adapting the human body to void or extra-planetary conditions while hundreds of millions adapted it to earth. musk’s mars ambitions are genuinely a nerd’s naive fascination with sending laborers to perish meaninglessly.

i can’t wait for massive volcanism to cause a completely unrelated mass extinction by transforming the earth’s climate beyond our ability to cope. climate change is real but the earth has changed a lot of its own accord many times, and the subtlety and sensitivity of our required conditions cannot be overstated

what could go wrong? let’s articulate a moral theology to structure the technological practices of an intellectual society. hey look we built a city of ten thousand people in the year 5k bce. nothing will ever unseat our grandeur.

narrator: the grandeur of uruk was ultimately unseated by unwise agricultural practices. its earth remains salted to this day.
