#digipres

Ok, thinking about trying out #pixelfed as well. Does anyone have an instance to recommend? Ideally one that supports imports from instagram

@parismarx Really examining the politics also is useful when people want to excuse or explain away a N*zi salute 😒🤮

I really appreciate the podcast Tech Won’t Save Us hosted by @parismarx. I’ve found it really useful for understanding more about the politics behind a lot of tech figures (yes, including several with truly fascist world views), as well as the implications of data centers, and more.

I got terrible news about two people I’d been friends with in my late teens and early twenties. Both have always struggled. One attempted suicide when we were both 21 years old. I still think about a letter I wrote him then. I told him I knew things were difficult in ways I couldn’t understand, but that I was grateful for every day he remained with us on this earth. I still think this way, & I’m grateful for all of you for every day we share & you’re here!

Things feel incredibly heavy now. The rise of authoritarianism in so many places, climate crisis, wars, an extreme lack of empathy and scapegoating marginalized groups. All the more reason to take care of yourselves & check in on your friends. In the US there’s 988 and lots of local and community-specific resources. In Austria there’s 142. However dark things seem, there are people for whom the world is a better place with you in it!

A sign I’m getting old & becoming a typical grantiger Wienerin is the feeling the only people who want to talk on the train sit within earshot. I just want to read & avoid a headache, but it seems impossible. There aren’t quiet cars here, so people are being reasonable, but it’s still annoying 😩

Alright, trying out #openvibe for a unified experience in #mastodon & #bluesky. So far the combined feed is pretty cool, with posts clearly marked as where they’re from. The notifications are slow to load, & there don’t seem to be push notifications? Testing the cross post feature with this toot!

I’d like to read more fiction exploring #climatechange this year & would love some recommendations. In the past couple years I’ve read Parable of the Sower, How Beautiful We Were, and Something New Under the Sun. (I loved the first two, the last one was meh.) Suggestions?

Another question for #Bluesky users that are also on #mastodon: are you using the bridge or an app like Openvibe? I’m trying to understand the advantages one way or another.

For along time I left my Twitter account active, so I could sporadically use it for following events live, but I feel like most of those accounts are at least also on Bluesky if not totally moved. I’m not psyched or trusting of Bluesky, but the active promotion of fascist parties on Twitter by Musk has convinced me that I don’t even want remnants of my old account there. (And yes, I realize they’ve already mined my gesture, but it’s still a symbolic gesture worth doing to me.)

One of my thoughts is to set up a Bluesky account now, while I haven’t yet totally killed my Twitter account to try to use the bridge so I can refind people I followed. With that done, I’ll finally delete my Twitter account (which I already archived).

Ok, I broke down and made a Bluesky account. I don’t expect to post there — I really like the atmosphere here and the quality of interactions. ❤️ But I realized lots of #Vienna based groups still don’t have accounts here, and I want some real time news. Anyway, if you want to follow me I’m archivist-liz@bsky.social. And if you have tips or tricks (like feeds I should follow?), let me know.

I'll add, this was not my only #digipres dream. I also dreamed a lot of us were at some kind of town hall, demanding more resources for digital preservation. It felt very strong and spirited, like with lots of homemade signs. But because it was a dream, besides a few of you out there, there were also old friends of mine from other forms of activism. Haha, it was like, oh cool, I didn't expect to see XYZ there. Can't really imagine this in real like, even though it would be so much fun!

I had some crazy #digipres dreams this weekend, including one where someone offered me an older PC with about 20 different drives hooked up to it (not just several generations of floppies, but things like zip and jaz drives, some other unusual formats I have at work), and I was so excited about it! 😅 And I was also thinking in the dream about posting it to Mastodon and how excited other folks would be. Oh well, just a dream 💭

I’m always curious about what folks are reading and looking for new ideas. I figure sharing what I read is a good way to start. I read 20 books this year, which is a lot for me. My favorite by far was The Most Secret History of Men. I would also strongly recommend The Vanishing Half, Yellowface, Crying in H Mart, Engel des Vergessen, and Such a Fun Age. The only book I’d avoid is 22 Bahnen. If you want to share more about reading, you can find me on Goodreads!

She’s done all of us such a service in working to make sure that shame changes sides. I really, really hope she has lots of continued support (in whatever form she needs) in her life.
