6 days into December and I decided to check yhe SSHD log of my server for unique usernames.

[#] Number of invalid usernames total
grep 'Invalid user' /var/log/auth.log | cut -d' ' -f9 | wc -l
6131

[#] Number of unique usernames
grep 'Invalid user' /var/log/auth.log | cut -d' ' -f9 | sort | uniq | wc -l
3301

6 days, 3301 unique user names.

Not as bad as for "root" though (login disabled).

grep 'Disconnected from authenticating user root' /var/log/auth.log | wc -l
14414
