I saw the Apple CPU speculative execution thing and wondered if it still came down to doing cache timing attacks, since I thought that had mostly been alleviated by making the timer functions in web browsers less accurate.

It looks like it does come down to cache timing, but there's a way around the coarse timers which they took from this completely bananas Usenix paper which implements Conway's Game of Life on the (notional) bitfields specifying cache residency

I finally got around to installing debian on my 9yo chromebook (the chromebook-specific distro I had on it has been unsupported for years now), and it was.. really smooth? It turns out most of the hassle with putting a non-google OS on a chromebook is sorting out the bootloader; once that's done it behaves like any other machine, and moving to debian was a matter of inserting a USB stick, rebooting, and following the prompts.

Suspend seems to work more smoothly as well now. I originally got this rather rugged machine so I could take a laptop to festivals in case of work emergency, or chuck it in my bike bag without having to worry too much, and while it's underpowered by today's standards it still works really well for these purposes.

Anyway, well done debian.

Just realised that my struggles in last night’s byte jam were probably because I’d forgotten to put on The Stripy Knee Socks, an obvious rookie mistake

Spent a large chunk of this jam in a blind panic because the geometry was misbehaving, until I finally found a single-character error about a minute before the time was up 😅

I used a similar shading trick to last time, because I'm still enjoying playing around with it; beyond that, inspiration came from (1) finding Alan Barr's 1981 paper on superquadrics, and (2) a brief moment in the Ulysses 31 intro sequence that someone happened to post to bsky a few days ago

Digging through old graphics papers and discovering that some people call SDFs "inside-outside functions", which is nicely descriptive if somehow less catchy

The Child received a convex regular 4-polytope for Christmas, which means I find myself needing to actually properly understand the Hopf fibration while still in the post-dinner haze

Having only found out about the "secret" Z-buffer quite recently, I was determined to make use of it in this evening's byte jam. I finished up with a little bit of time spare to admire the other participants' effects, which is good because they were all amazing!

I have made a bergamot drizzle cake (partly as a result of a convo with @cendawanita a while back) and am now of the opinion that bergamot cake + BS6008 tea >>> lemon cake + Earl Grey

TIL you can make macOS manage windows Correctly (viz: focus follows mouse, no autoraise) as follows:

git clone https://github.com/sbmpost/AutoRaise.git

cd AutoRaise && make CXXFLAGS="-DOLD_ACTIVATION_METHOD -DEXPERIMENTAL_FOCUS_FIRST"

cp -a AutoRaise.app /Applications

/Applications/AutoRaise.app/Contents/MacOS/AutoRaise -delay 0 -focusDelay 1

I read @lpbkdotnet 's resurrection of good old finger with a tinge of sadness since I thought I wasn't on any machines which supported it, and didn't really feel up to spinning something up just for this.

But then I remembered!

Complete with the planfile security exploit which took a surprising number of people in when I was an undergrad

bonus weirdness: it was preventing TIC-80 from reading the sound input, but I did not fix it by granting permissions to TIC-80, and I'm not sure that's even possible!

No, I granted sound perms to Alacritty, because that's where I typed the command to launch TIC-80 - I guess perms are inherited from the parent process.

It has been 0️⃣ days since I wasted the best part of an hour trying to track down weird behaviour due to macOS suddenly deciding to get even more anal about permissions than it used to be (and also not bothering to tell me about this)

I’ve had a running joke with The Child that one of a certain sort of baked good is called a “monogestive biscuit”, three is “trigestive”, an entire packet is “polygestive”, etc.

This evening he made the intriguing suggestion that “di” refers to dimensionality: a monogestive biscuit would be stick shaped, a trigestive would be spherical, and so on.
