Also, find out your size (including width) in men's and women's shoes if you're in the overlap, or kids if you have very small feet.

They're shoes not underwear. No need to gender them!

You can have more variety to choose from, more potential finds on the sale rack, and sometimes avoid the pink tax (if a particular type is more expensive and/or less well made in women's sizes).

If you're feeling like you're getting arthritis in your big toe and dang aging sucks, get your shoe size tested.

Turns out I'm now a half size bigger in both feet AND my right foot (with the sad toe) is bigger than the left so that's why it hurt first and more.

Thank you to the lovely shoe expert Nico at the REI on Brannan in SF. My feet are definitely going to be happier in future.

Big picture: you'll be on the toilet a long time the night before; make it comfortable. This doesn't have to be terrible and it is super duper worth it.

So if I don't need to for some reason, if it's not fun in and of itself, why spend time grinding to get something out into the broader world unless it relieves suffering?

Products are of limited utility. Instead, seize every moment available for amplifying personal contentment, safety, delight, joy, for yourself and others.

It's all going to get more complicated and harder to seize those moments. Start building your tools now. Start gathering your sweet memories.

It's grief of course. So much grief over humanity failing the most vulnerable, again and again. Grief and anger as money-chasing becomes the main reason for doing for many people, most organizations, even societies.

"What a damn shame; there was so much potential" is a frequent mood when I look at the intentional decision of those with the most resources to accelerate rather than slow climate change.

Somehow still joy in the small, the personal. But the big human picture is not encouraging.

It speaks to a larger and deeper disillusionment with the online world. I put a huge amount of my life into it and regret not working to build in more defenses against the damaging influence of extractive capitalism in those early years.

I'm turning towards small communities now. My friends, chosen family, family, neighbors. And online this little slice of the wider world that reads my posts and whose posts I read. Members of a few Patreon communities and similar.

Not sure if other creative folks are feeling a loss of motivation to share things online, but it's definitely hit me pretty hard about my writing and game design.

First is the pointlessness of providing uncompensated work for the AI companies to vacuum up.

Second is the sense of hopelessness of being able to be found in the sea of auto-generated content beginning to rise (along with the deliberate self-sabotage of search engines).

I'm glad I wasn't counting on earning a living at it.

Pretty likely.

And then it will come down to whether my chosen family (and family) also will or can move.

But where to go? And how?

If I were 20 years or more younger I'd enroll in whatever essential worker profession I liked best that allows immigration into places I'd want to go.

Harder when you're retired with pre-existing conditions.

And my Evacuate Overnight definitely list:

• Vigiante heat vs me or my chosen family.

• Me or one of my chosen family gets hatecrime'd.

There's a lot more 'Stay and Fight' on my list than there would be if I could get pregnant or was trans or had kids or was an immigrant or was Black. I can work my transition to harmless old white lady to my (and others') advantage.
