If you're feeling like you're getting arthritis in your big toe and dang aging sucks, get your shoe size tested.
Turns out I'm now a half size bigger in both feet AND my right foot (with the sad toe) is bigger than the left so that's why it hurt first and more.
Thank you to the lovely shoe expert Nico at the REI on Brannan in SF. My feet are definitely going to be happier in future.

Also, find out your size (including width) in men's and women's shoes if you're in the overlap, or kids if you have very small feet.
They're shoes not underwear. No need to gender them!
You can have more variety to choose from, more potential finds on the sale rack, and sometimes avoid the pink tax (if a particular type is more expensive and/or less well made in women's sizes).
