Going to add a relay server to my #snac instance so that I can follow hashtags and then I'm maybe going to look into installing a #GeminiCapsule in a #FreeBsd #Bastille jail just because and experience using Molly Brown. 🤔

Right I've add the user relay to my #snac server and followed https://fedi-relay.gyptazy.com and it seems to be working I think according to the instructions here:

https://codeberg.org/grunfink/snac2/src/commit/468b7a38885152cb2d61537abfdd9a4cda9c847a/doc/snac.8#L587

I've followed the #FreeBSD hashtag for now and will see what happens. One thing that does come to mind is that you now have a user called relay that doesn't actually seem to do much other than follow the actors ????

Do I now have to follow my relay or is this something that the snac server takes care of ???

Also is it a good idea or can the relay user follow multiple relay actors ??

@justine@snac.smithies.me.uk I noticed that being committed to #snac2 but didn't realise the significance of the feature. There are a few hashtags I miss following.

@justine Yes, it seems it's working as your instance is present here: https://fedi-relay.gyptazy.com/

Hi, Justine. No, you don't need to follow the relay user. This user, subscribed to the relays, starts receiving messages from them and stores them temporarily in its own timeline. If any of these posts contains a hashtag that your personal user follows, it's added automatically to your timeline. Also, every time you post a public message, it's also boosted from the relay user to the relays, improving the reachability.

Cool and thank you for explaining that this is exciting and nerve wracking at the same time trying out new features. Also can I follow other relays to get more or is that not the way it works ?

@grunfink@comam.es @justine@snac.smithies.me.uk Would it be possible for the relay user not to be seen to have boosted my posts? (ie. It passes on the posts but doesn't add itself?)

@justine@snac.smithies.me.uk @grunfink@comam.es The toots which the other side of the relay passes on also appear as boosts.

Ah, and yes, your relay user can follow as many relays as you wish. Incoming message traffic will increase, so it's more possible to catch the hashtags you like. Of course, bandwidth and storage will also increase.

Thank you I understand, now I just need to remove the relay user from the greeting page so folk don't follow it when they don't need to and only I as the single user are listed.

Also I take that it is ok to fill in the description / bio for the relay user explaining what it is in case folk stumble upon it ? This won't affect the relays ?

Mmm this is something I didn't thought about 🤔. I'll do a little change to avoid showing the relay user as a 'real' user from the greeting page.

One last thing I'm not sure about. In server.json the admin account is that @justine@snac.smithies.me.uk or just @justine ?? I have added the first option and rebooted but don't see it on https://fedi-relay.gyptazy.com/

I only see my description.

You really should give #snac a try. It does take a minute getting used to the differences between Mastodon but once you're past that it's all good. I'd 100% recommend for a lightweight Mastodon replacement.
