I normally don't wade in on vaccine stuff because I am both HUGELY pro-vax and ALSO hugely discouraged and deeply annoyed by how flat and stupid the left insists on making the discourse. With that as caveat
YOU CAN ABSOLUTELY GET THE FLU IF YOU HAVE HAD THE FLU VAX. HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS DO. IT IS NOT PREVENTATIVE. IT IS AMELIORATIVE. And even then it depends on vax-to-strain match.
Thank you.

I will just go ahead and say the thing: vaccine injuries do exist. People get injured by vaccines every year, in significant numbers. We used to know and understand this, AND EVEN WITH KNOWING AND UNDERSTANDING THIS, we also used to have a much more static consensus that vaccines = good. The idiocy on the right seems to have demanded idiocy on the left in equal measure to stay balanced and now we all seem committed to no one understanding anything.
Statistically certainly, some people will become ill, be injured, and usually a few will even die due to any large-scale vax campaign. YOU ARE CAPABLE OF UNDERSTANDING THIS, I SWEAR TO GOD.
IT'S JUST THAT EVEN. MORE. PEOPLE. will die, be sickened, and be injured WITHOUT VACCINES. By a HUGE FACTOR.
We choose the greater good. We compensate those harmed (this is why VAERS exists, y'all and now not even doctors understand it).
This is the covenant of living in liberal society.
Which we now don't.
So instead we have idiocy all around.

My own kid was vaccine injured. Yes, it's the kid with autism. No, his injury was not autism. He had status epilepticus, uncontrolled days-long seizure episode requiring hospitalization. It is a rare but not at all unheard of side effect from DTAP.
Guess what dealing with it was a total nightmare, about 10% of which was the med issue and 90% of which was HOW COMPLETELY STUPID EVERYONE HAS BECOME ABOUT THIS STUFF.
Large scale policies always, always harm some people at the margin.
We literally ask those people to suck it up and deal, and for all of us to throw in with the lottery for the greater good.
That's how society works.
You don't have to make it worse by pretending that vaccines are perfect and that harm doesn't happen, however.
That turns a liberal society lottery into something more like Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery."
Calm down. Use brain. Stop flattening everything.

I would guess we are T minus 1 year out from a post in The Conversation in which a social scientist and a medical researcher VERY EARNESTLY act like they are DISCOVERING AND RESPONSIBLY DISCLOSING that SOMETIMES vaccines ACTUALLY CAN CAUSE HARM. It will be LITERALLY WHAT WE HAVE KNOWN SINCE THE 60s, at scale, when it was previously used to bolster vax educational programs and funding for those harmed (again VAERS) so that society could care for its victims while also keeping all of us as safe as possible with herd immunity. THIS TIME IT WILL BE USED TO FURTHER WEAKEN THE CONSENSUS THAT VACCINES ARE NEEDED and upon its publication I will become an incandescent malevolent ether floating above the land

@jnl A lot of people tend to act like life is all or nothing and there is nothing in between allowed. In reality, most things are some probability, especially when you're dealing with significant complicated diversity like human bodies, and we have to decide things like the tiny chance of a vaccine injury being better than the higher chance of worse harm to a lot more people if nobody got vaccinated.

@Ryan Sure, and we also need to recognize our collective obligation to care for those who are harmed for the good of the many. Which is part of what gets hidden on the left side of this discussion. Vaccines are not perfect. Some mop up is inevitably required, both because vaxxed people will still catch some illnesses (flu, covid, and increasingly pertussis) and because a few people will be sickened or killed by the vax.

@Ryan I have seen leftists behave in ways that are terrifying, and in some cases ways that I would characterize as evil, in the unwillingness to care for those who suffer harm at the margin. That's not ok, and neither we nor public health are better for it.
