I soaked this #gouache painting in so much water that the aquarelle paper totally lost its form. It's all wibbly wobbly :D

Painted in two sessions, about 4 hrs in total... Reference photo by a friend.

A sudden creative bout today. I spent maybe 3 hours on this painting that emerged pretty much from nowhere. It's not even autumn yet!

It was surprisingly sunny yesterday, so I sketched this rusty old wheelbarrow used as a garden feature in my A6 notebook. It took just over half an hour. A strangely behaving bee kept me company when I sat in the grass. It was falling all over the place like it was very ill or intoxicated. I wonder what was wrong with it.

We were taught how to make our own charcoal too:

• willow shoots had been cut and stripped of their bark

• they were then cut into smaller pieces and placed into an empty metal box (mine was an old coffee box)

• a few holes were made in the lid by driving a nail through it

• the box was placed in a campfire for about half an hour. Apparently 15 mins could be enough. And voila! :blobartist:

I think the process resembles reduction firing pottery in a kiln, as the point is to restrict the amount of oxygen available for burning. Otherwise those bits of wood would just turn into ashes.

Did some charcoal drawing yesterday, for the first time in donkey's years. I've never learnt the proper techniques but thankfully there was someone with more experience around who could share some helpful tips about texturing. It was a fun evening!

For #caturday, here's a section of a masking tape practise #waterColour piece (from 2020). The goal was to mask out the iron parts of the fence, paint everything else, then remove the tape and fill in the fence parts. Well, it almost worked out :) The background lacked contrast and turned out very messy when I tried to improve it.

The photo ref of the street cat was taken somewhere in Lazio, Italy a few years earlier.

Here are some artworks from my 'powerlines' period at around 2018. I find those things aesthetically pleasing :blobcatpirate: Most of these were painted using photo references that I had snapped from a moving car on one particularly foggy winter day.
