Did some charcoal drawing yesterday, for the first time in donkey's years. I've never learnt the proper techniques but thankfully there was someone with more experience around who could share some helpful tips about texturing. It was a fun evening!

We were taught how to make our own charcoal too:

• willow shoots had been cut and stripped of their bark

• they were then cut into smaller pieces and placed into an empty metal box (mine was an old coffee box)

• a few holes were made in the lid by driving a nail through it

• the box was placed in a campfire for about half an hour. Apparently 15 mins could be enough. And voila! :blobartist:

I think the process resembles reduction firing pottery in a kiln, as the point is to restrict the amount of oxygen available for burning. Otherwise those bits of wood would just turn into ashes.
