Listening to a very posh English scientist on the radio talk about the moon having ‘tights’ It took me a while to realize he was talking about tides. I will be thinking about the moon wearing panty hose for a while.

We’re apparently growing icicles now. Does anyone need a big one? It would make a perfect sword or lance for vanquishing your enemies, but only if you intend to fight in a cold place. As a bonus, this is an extendible weapon. It’s dripping right now and will probably be a bit bigger once it freezes.

Just had an announcement on the Forest App talking about how great AI is and how they’re rolling out a subscriber package 🤮 I wouldn’t care much except I’ve actually been enjoying using this App lately. Sigh! I guess it’s back to a notebook and timer then.

I did my breathing/meditation yesterday in the snow. Didn’t stay too long, just enough to get a bit frozen.
The tree branches were covered in ice and they whispered, cracked and squeaked in the wind. The wind chimes sound icy. Have a listen. It does take a little while to get going.

Mushrooms are so weird. Just saying. How do I know when my overlords are ready to harvest? I did have a dream about them last night (they’re in our bedroom closet) should I take this as a sign? Should I wait for them to send me a message? (don’t answer that 😆 )These guys are so young, they’re not barely a week old yet.

@ahermitforhire gave me a shiitake mushroom kit as one of my gifts, and I am excited and nervous to be in charge of my fungi overlords. I’m pretty sure they have already started sprouting mushrooms without me in their little bag.
I hope that I can take charge without there being a fungi rebellion. I’ve heard that sometimes they can generate in weird places. Keep me in your thoughts…😆

I’m off to make three sheets of pastry:
One for mince pies, the other 2 for an apple pie.
Please keep me in your thoughts and send your good wishes. If you hear a disembodied scream you will know that it is me and that things are not going so well.
I’m going to listen to the audio version of “The Bear and the Nightingale” by Katherine Arden in an attempt to not be fully present while wrangling the pastry demons.

Visited the Taft Art Museum today and encountered some serious chonky pony energy. I love Chinese ponies in works of art. I get the feeling they’d be in your pocket and would follow you around getting treats.

Just got done reading Peony in Love by Lisa See and Piranesi by Susanna Clarke and my head is full of beautiful worlds. Both books filled me up in such unexpected ways.
Peony in Love I thought was just a romance novel but it was about woman’s rights, human emotion, keeping secrets and what it’s like to be a hungry ghost. The descriptions of the afterlife are AMAZING!
Piranesi was so beautiful and not as harsh as I thought it would end up being. The descriptions of the house are so lush and beautiful.
Both books are similarly about adapting to realities and accepting them. Both main characters find peace in different ways and learn to survive and thrive. Both learn that the people they think they know are keeping secrets.
Both ladies are amazing writers. I have to dig into my library and find something to follow these up with now.
Anyway, I know neither of these books are new but if you’re looking for some thoughtful escapism, here it is.

A friend retired today so I gave them my contact info and then had to explain to them for 10 minutes why I’m not on Facebook anymore. She told another coworker so I had to start my explanation again. You’d think I’d quit a religion or cult of some kind, oh wait…. :blobcatwinkanimated:

The Feverfew is blooming like crazy and the whole area smells of honey. My Four O’Clocks have taken over the side of the bed. I’m a bit confused as I saw a website mention that Feverfew repels bees which isn’t the case here, but when I ID these flowers they come up as Fever Few so I dunno.

Kind of lost time a bit in the yard and all of a sudden everything was dark and felt like there had been a massive time skip. House still open to the world all in darkness. Closed the door and put on lights. Feeling that weird unprepared, ominous feeling. Like dude it’s just an hour difference but holy shit it just whipped my ass. Feel like I showed up to a Christmas party wearing shorts and flip flops. Must go out and buy candles, must get some candles, must get all the lights…

To the Spider-Man theme: (clears throat)
“Spotty butt, Spotty butt, you have got a spotty butt…”
Sugarbush draft horse. I love him. I just want to ride him around a big wood somewhere just plodding around.
I’m out for a walk in the cold air to try and wake up, I got about 4 hours sleep last night and 5 the night before, and it’s doing me in. I’m officially stupid tired.

Met this little guy today. I think he was cold and trying to warm up in the sunshine. Nobody noticed him so I didn’t want to draw too much attention. I love mice but I know not everyone does.

I’ve just realized I spend a lot of time avoiding other people’s noise. I wish there was regulation on the noise levels of outdoor machinery like lawnmowers, weedeaters, leaf blowers and chainsaws. Beautiful day today and so relaxing now two neighbors are cutting grass at the same time. I understand that it needs doing in sunny weather, but there has to be some kind of muffler to dull the noise?
This week when I was working from home I had to listen to someone use a chainsaw for 8 hours, people in the front of the house were mowing so it was surround sound. I didn’t want to bitch because I figured a tree was being felled because of the storms, but it turned out that was not the case.
People are entitled to do things, but there has to be a way to make machinery that isn’t so loud?

If you want to get into ghostie season, I recommend the following podcasts.
The Night Owl Podcast - ghost investigation focused in Austin, TX with historical background to locations, psychic readings and first hand accounts. Each episode is beautifully written with a lot of empathy and compassion and it’s a huge reminder that ghosts are people too. The stories are great.
https://pca.st/podcast/c3363410-95f6-0135-9d36-5bb073f92b78
Ghosts and Folklore of Wales Podcast- A really excellent source of Welsh ghost stories with deep dives in Welsh folklore. Always interesting.
Uncanny Podcast
Ghost stories and investigations. Really good stories, some of the first hand accounts are ridiculous. They open the investigations to listeners to send in and give any accounts to add to the stories. https://pca.st/podcast/65a83070-0e6f-013a-d57b-0acc26574db2
Enjoy!! Now here’s my disclaimer. I love all of these, but seriously get weirded out going from the Night Owl to Uncanny.
Uncanny tries to be skeptical which is fine, but some of the people giving the accounts are like: ‘My little sister was lifted into the air and thrown across the room. It was terrifying.’
Presenter: Do you believe in ghosts now?
Bored British Voice ‘Um no, not really. I’m sure there’s an explanation for this.’ :ablobwhatisgoingon:
I also really enjoyed one ladies account of going to a witchy store for the first time. Honest to god you’d think she’d found a cave in the woods with someone with a pointy hat, the way she’s described it. She noted that the shop keeper was extremely weird and witchy because he had black nail polish on. :eyeroll:
Anyway don’t let that put you off!

Lots of berries in the yard. Especially in the second photo, these are all volunteers but I love the way they’re arranged. There’s always such a complimentary range of colors and leaf shape. Me thinks it’s going to be a snowy winter.
