Now doing proofreading of movie subs that went through MTPE - the error rate is much higher and I'm thinking my rate for such projects should be higher too. You can just see that the translator's judgement drifted as a result of exposure to text that may or may not be correct.

My cycle of relationship with LinkedIn has been back at "disgusted hate" for a while now and I don't see it recovering any time soon.
All's well.

If you liked The Return of the Obra Dinn, really make sure to check out The Roottrees are Dead - https://store.steampowered.com/app/2754380/The_Roottrees_are_Dead/ . Similar kind of satisfaction from sleuthing and deduction. Indie. Just go play it. I know I am going to.

Aaand today, they let me know they'll have to go with MTPE for the second half of a season of a series I've been working on. Their client's decision, lowered rate. I stepped away from this particular project, let's see how long I can afford to stick to my principles.

I hear rumours about my main client (~70% of income) wanting to push MTPE. For now, I like to think that I'd rather do something else entirely than correct MT or "AI" stuff. Let's see how much longer can Slovak be one of the more difficult languages to build a good MT model for.

So I wrote to the PM and explained why my translation is objectively better and the client should be made aware of this.
Today the episode came out and to add insult to injury, there's the bad episode title WITH A TYPO that makes the title look like it was written by a Czech.
Tomorrow I'm sending another complaint, there's my name at the end of the episode and I don't want to be connected to this shitty translation. I'm a much better translator than their marketing intern or whoever. 🧵END

My Slovak title: Poďme, bratia, do Springfieldu
"Come, brothers, to Springfield". It's local, it's Simpsons, every Slovak immediately knows it's Christmas. I already have to localize a ton of Simpsons jokes anyways.
Well some time later, I get a file with the revised metadata.
"Revised" Slovak title: Ó, poďme všetci verní
Just a literal translation of the source, that's it. Google Translate can give you that. Zero localization. About a thousand times worse than my translation. 🧵2

Rant incoming.
I translate Simpson subtitles for Disney+ into Slovak. I worked on the recently released Christmas special and I was also asked to translate the episode title.
The title: O C'mon All Ye Faithful
Now I think every translator knows that this needs to be localized, the name of an old English carol means nothing to the Slovak viewer.
There is a Slovak carol named "Poďme, bratia, do Betléma", which means "Come, brothers, to Betlehem". So I decided to give it a tiny twist. 🧵1

Translators and AI being compared to knocker-uppers and alarm clocks definitely wasn't on my bingo card today. But then again not even AI can come up with LinkedIn lunatics' takes.

Continuing on the note of things that make me happy in this job, few things feel better than putting down my translator credit at the end of an episode or a movie.

The Slovak morphology was published in 1966. The run was 3,000 copies, no more. It's available electronically for free as a scan of the book, but physical copies are quite rare.
Just got mine. All the way from the University Library Salzburg, where it was decommissioned in 2020.
