This morning.

Ninety-three million miles away, hydrogen fuses into helium under immense pressure and heat. Neutrons and photons are thrown off. Those photons take millions of years to escape the sun, then travel across the vast distance to cascade down, through my wintry window and light up this tomato to my simple-minded delight.

My brain is so weird.

While showering just now, my brain decided to latch onto The Cask of Amontillado. In high school elocution class, we had to perform a portion of that. And I realized tonight, we were doing it all wrong. The part where we were all getting louder and louder, we should have been getting softer and softer.

So I got out of the shower and had to look up the full text.

Asshole. It wasn't The Cask of Amontillado at all. It was The Tell Tale Heart.

If anyone knows of any author's co-op that helps publish/sell authors' works online and ensures the authors get paid the bulk of their sales, please let me know. I know several really good authors that are still stuck with the big online sites.

I get it. Amazon has a virtual monopoly on direct to consumer publishing. But wherever possible, I'm going to buy books directly from an author's site, like @pluralistic https://craphound.com

or @violetblue https://www.digitapub.com

Fellow #books people, please do your part to support your favorite authors. Do what you can so they get a bigger cut of their own work. Bezos has a big enough yacht.

After more than four years of careful masking and avoiding indoor public spaces, my wonderful husband caught #Covid for the first time on a 14 hour flight seated next to an obviously very sick person the first week of December.

We were able to get him on Paxlovid and he quarantined in the bedroom for 10 days, and I managed not to be infected. That's the good part.

He's continuing to recover, but is still often tired by the afternoon and needs a nap.

He's so smart, but lately I've had to repeat things to him several times. He has no memory that he's told me something already, or I've told him something before.

I don't tell him about it. I just repeat things as if it's my first time telling him. When he tells me something for the third time, I react as if it's my first time hearing it.

He's so proud of his mind. It's sad that we're in this place. But we'll deal with it. I just hope this is temporary.

I should have made these almond croissants yesterday, so we'd have had them this morning, but they'll be perfectly fine tomorrow. Yes, I'll dust them with confectioner's sugar as soon as they've cooled. It'll be glorious.
