I have a csv dataset and a word doc code book. I could easily reshape the code book by hand into something easier to read, e.g., another csv spec of variable names, labels, and factor levels. Is there a robust #rstats package that takes such a code book and fixes up factor levels etc in a data frame?

Is there any point in therapy if behaviour is “unavoidably determined”?

One week to apply for the senior researcher role in the Quantitative Impact Evaluation (QIE) Hub at Verian Group UK. Hybrid working, two days/week in the Westminster office a short stroll from Parliament. Worth a look if you are into RCTs/QEDs and #RStats

The literal translation of RedNote's Chinese name, Xiaohongshu (小红书) is "Little Red Book", like the Chairman Mao text. LOL

Always a fan of a counterfactual, I thought I’d give this thought experiment a try: If LLMs were around when I was an academic, how would I have advised students to use them? LLMs weren’t in widespread use about a hundred (four) years ago when I was teaching, so I shall begin with three similar activities and see if I can guess how I would have responded to LLMs.

Public attitudes, measured through opinion polls, aren’t causes of themselves; they’re consequences of many influences including public policy.

If you surveyed the country’s health and found high rates of illness, you wouldn’t conclude that public policy should strive to make people ill.

“Love, the warmth of bodies in contact, is the only mercy shown to us in the darkness. But the only union is that of the organs, and it can’t bridge over the cleavage made by speech. Yet they unite in order to produce beings to stand by them in their hopeless isolation. And the generations look coldly into each other’s eyes. If you cram a ship full to bursting with human bodies, they all freeze with loneliness.”

– Brecht, In the Jungle of Cities

Periodically I listen to contemporary debates in #evaluation and wonder how much progress there has been in the past fifty years. I had a look at two purposively sampled 😉 pages of Carol Weiss's (1972) classic text, Evaluation Research: https://andifugard.info/modelling-theories-of-change-a-look-at-weiss-1972/

Are there any scientists (broadly defined) who think of themselves as positivists these days? Do you? It’s common for people criticising, e.g., trialists to accuse them of positivism, but I don’t know of anyone who self-identifies as positivist.

That feeling when you want to see the 648 permutations of the words “evidence”, “based”, “policy”, and “making”, conjoined by space, hyphen, or just stuck together without either to make a closed compound word.

Any ideas for making the code prettier...?

Austrian President "gave the green light to far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ) leader Herbert Kickl to attempt and form the new ruling coalition". [1]

FPÖ was founded by Anton Reinthaller, "an Austrian Nazi who had served as a lieutenant general in the SS" [2]

Great musical on at the Garrick, #London: Why Am I So Single?

It's fabulous, feminist and queer – and a pleasant surprise it’s so central and packed with audiences.
