PSA: you might have seen the warnings that the "ubuntu-latest" GitHub CI runner image tag was changing from 22.04 -> 24.04.

What's perhaps less obvious is that this is a rolling change. In fact, you can end up in a situation where a fork of repo X has ubuntu-latest=22.04 and the upstream at the same rev has ubuntu-latest=24.04

This discovery brought to you by a few hours lost debugging glibc version mismatches on a PR 😭

It's a good thing I don't find Copilot especially helpful ⏳

Fresh from the Rustls measurement bench @jpixton has a writeup of some exciting hybrid KX performance testing results:

"We can see that the performance headroom that rustls has attained means we can almost completely absorb the extra cost of post-quantum key exchange, while still performing better than (post-quantum-insecure) OpenSSL -- with the exception of client resumption."

Back in ~May I helped debug some Rust certificate/CSR generation code that was suddenly producing confusing malformed SANs after a rust-openssl update. This past week I bumped into the same situation a second time.

Since folks keep tripping into this and it's October I thought this would be a perfect chance to enjoy a short debugging story that culminates in spooky OpenSSL horrors:

The right way to run CUPS is "for precisely as short a time as possible, exactly at the moment you need to print".

Rebuild, print, rebuild.
