Cool footpath behind Horsetail Falls. I’m starting my first ever winter backpacking trip this morning. Temps are going to get down to 26F/-3C. Wish me luck, I’m going to need it.

After a couple days hiking in the desert I needed a strenuous hike in the mountains because they’d been calling to me. Made a nice loop with the Wyeth, Gorton Creek, and Gorge trails. Most of the loop was overgrown as the trails had fire closures all summer. The trail on Nick Eaten ridge was a nightmare so I rerouted as quickly as possible. The ridge had tons of deadfall. Great to see the volcanoes covered in snow.

Operating on a lack of sleep this morning. Was woken up while sleeping in my vehicle near midnight by a county sheriff at a columbia river gorge trailhead checking on what I’m doing. She gave me mixed signals about if what I was doing was strictly prohibited but she left quickly after checking my identification and presumably history. Hard to go back to sleep after that. Will need to find better places to stealth camp.

I wasn’t sure if I would want to spend another day in the desert but I needed to explore some more canyons. Amazed by this new experience. Additional photos of the park.

As soon as the rain forecast cleared for a few days, I headed straight for Cottonwood Canyon State Park. I’ve been itching to explore here after driving past a couple months ago. Started up a canyon ridge very early. Used a mix of trail, game paths, old roads, and bushwhacking to skirt the north edge of the park above the canyon. Then dropped back down to a river trail to loop back to camp along the river. Much more beautiful and fun than I expected.
