Ancestors

As soon as the rain forecast cleared for a few days, I headed straight for Cottonwood Canyon State Park. I’ve been itching to explore here after driving past a couple months ago. Started up a canyon ridge very early. Used a mix of trail, game paths, old roads, and bushwhacking to skirt the north edge of the park above the canyon. Then dropped back down to a river trail to loop back to camp along the river. Much more beautiful and fun than I expected.

I wasn’t sure if I would want to spend another day in the desert but I needed to explore some more canyons. Amazed by this new experience. Additional photos of the park.

Toot

Operating on a lack of sleep this morning. Was woken up while sleeping in my vehicle near midnight by a county sheriff at a columbia river gorge trailhead checking on what I’m doing. She gave me mixed signals about if what I was doing was strictly prohibited but she left quickly after checking my identification and presumably history. Hard to go back to sleep after that. Will need to find better places to stealth camp.

@andrewbriscoe Used to stealth camp on the WA side in the 00s when spring chinook runs were bonkers in the Wind and White Salmon rivers. A sheriff checked me once and directed me to a short dirt road that ended above a pond. It was perfect and camped in my truck there several times. Somewhere between Drano Lake and the Wind.

@GPJohnston Going to have to check that area out, especially since I want to do more hiking on the Washington side. I was at the Wyeth Trailhead in the gorge so it was a risky location. I feel like dirt roads are way safer. I tried to engage her on better locations where they wouldn’t care or check me but she actually didn’t seem to care about what I was doing, she didn’t tell me to leave and a couple times said something to the effect of, “Not trying to be an asshole.”

@GPJohnston She pretty much said they don’t care about people “sleeping” and after confirming who I was, she already knew, she said no one else would bother me and she left.

@andrewbriscoe I imagine they are concerned about things like trailhead break-ins and tweakers. Wish I could remember that spot, but chances are things have changed in 20-some years.

@GPJohnston Exactly, I was too close to Portland to be sleeping at a trailhead.
