Yesterdays #38c3 @hackertours visit of DESY was great. We saw the entrance to the HERA tunnel, the PETRA III experimental hall and lots of detectors.

Success!

Third time's a charm! The sodium chloride vaporized a bit much but did its job nonetheless. Next time I'll use borax and a lower temperature.

A nice ingot of Cu2MnAl formed in the crucible.

It has a golden tinge as is usual for aluminium bronzes.

And it its very magnetic! Video in the next post!

Although those pictures are neat, I wanted to try again and get a properly mixed and melted ingot of alloy.

Suspecting the oxidation of the powder particles as the reason for the improper melting I wanted to try bigger pieces of metals.

So this time I used manganese flakes, aluminium drops and copper wire. And for good measure some sodium chloride as a flux and further protection from oxygen.

Bake at 1400°C for 60min and enjoy!

Doing hot stuff again 🔥

This time it's a mixture of copper, aluminium and manganese called a Heusler alloy, named after its discoverer.

It's made from non-ferromagnetic metals but is ferromagnetic when combined!

The first time I tried it in my furnace and the mixture did not flow together properly. But it is magnetic!

So I tried the same powder mixture again but this time in a furnace that can reach 1400°C instead of only 1100°C.

And just for fun I tried to remelt the first attempt.

I didn't assemble the LEDs myself, that was done by JLCPCB. I just populated the controller board and then soldered the 6 PCBs to form the cube.

Next time I would go with 1mm oder even less thickness for the PCB...1.6mm is quite chonky.

This happens when you sit next to @tinyledmatrix on a train to #hackadayberlin2024.

The cube uses 320 1.6mm RGB LEDs on a 2mm grid. All sides are connected by solder joints to connect the LEDs in one continous chain. A sixth PCB sits in the middle of the cube holding the microcontroller and USB-C socket.

Now I have to do some work on the firmware to make it display more interesting patterns...

This almost feels like magic. A ferromagnetic alloy made from to non-magnetic metals!

"Bismanol" is an alloy of Bismuth and Manganese, developed in the 1950s by the Naval Ordnance Lab (as hinted to by the -nol in the name).

To make it, I melted 32.9g of Bi and then added 7.0g of Mn to the melt. The mixture was heated to ~800°C and then poured into a mold.

The ratio or the quenching might not be optimal to reach maximum magnetism, but I am pretty pleased with the result.

I cooled a cube of Gadolinium to below its Curie temperature of 20°C. At this temperature the metal changes from being paramagnetic to ferromagnetic (or helically antiferromagnetic, whatever that means exactly). This makes it much more attracted to a magnet and it jumps up!
